My Weekend Tow Story

If you are going near the speed limit in many parts of the country on a two lane road you WILL soon be holding up cars. Especially when the hours are around going to work and leaving work. I'll come out of Tupelo heading north on the Trace around 3 pm and set my speed 5 mph ABOVE the speed limit (checked by GPS) and will routinely have a line of 5 to 10 cars back up. Tough, I'm speeding. And I applaud it when some jerk passes me and a few miles down the road I catch up to him on the side of the road talking to the police.
Virginia speed limit enforcement seems to be very strict. We actually cancelled a family trip there after hearing about people getting tickets fot 5 over.

Garandman, you won't like new zealand then. The police ticket you at 4km/h over on a public holiday. They also put speed traps on passing lanes as well.
As for people with a death wish, yes we have them to. Brake checking a petrol tanker!!! and on camera at that. PING.

5 over won't get you noticed in any part of VA I've traveled in, unless you're 5 over in a 25/35 zone, or a 75 zone. Once you pass 80, it's reckless driving and a misdemeanor. I once got caught for 81 in my WRX doing a quick pass, and it was an eye opener. You can't just pay that ticket, you have to appear in court and hope the judge is in a good mood.

Okay one more thing I was thinking about today while hauling an excavator back to my shop. The road conditions through the Catskills in NY just plain suck. There are a huge number of ruts, dips bumps and potholes that are much less perceptable in a car than in a truck. The only way I know how to keep it together is to slow down.

I look at the roadways the same way I do a hike in the park. I too have paid my price for my admission and if I want to walk a little slower than you go ahead and walk by me but do not expect me to walk faster just because you are behind me...

Back over twenty years ago I was a heavy hauler. and the wife drove also. when we where overweight & she was driving if we came to a steep grade. she always got in a gear she was sure the rig would pull the grade without having to shift at the bottom. many times it was first gear on the 13speed. she has the aditude she was bigger than everyone else and paid for her share of the road. she lots of times had too many vehicles to count following along behind. when we finally did get to a place where we could pull over and let them go past. the first 50 or so would be shooting us the bird. the later ones would be commenting on the CB about how that truck aint never gonna get a break in traffic to get out on the road.

But recently I've found a new type of JA. They speed up to 60 or more in the areas where you can legally pass, then drop down to 45 or less all the rest of the way. I salute them.

That used to tick me off, too. But I thought about it for a while..... passing zones are usually in longer straightaways where people are comfortable driving fast and no passing zones are usually in curvy or hilly areas, where people lose the confidence to drive fast. So, its most likely those folks are not confident drivers that slow down in curves and on hills (no passing zones where you're on their butt) and when they get to the longer straightaways (passing zones), they try to speed up to get you off their butt. That, or they're just trying to tick you off!

When I am trailering a load who and how many are behind me is not my concern. Totally focused on what is in front of me. Since I generally cruise 3 MPH below posted limits, I almost always have a line of cars behind me and the benifit of no one in front of me.

People react in all different ways to trucks and truck trailer combinations and I feel bad for them that their life is in such utter chaos that they have to drive dangerously.

Zen trucking is the way to go...

Why 3 below? That would just tick people off more than if you were going exactly.

The favorite trick around here is side by side going ten under the speed limit :banghead::pullinghair: Then the idiots get an attitude when someone cuts them off  cops have actually started ticketing folks for impeding the flow of traffic

What irritates me is getting behind somebody driving 45 in a 55 MPH zone and not being able to pass and when they get to a 45 MPH zone they slow down to 35 and you still can't pass WTH

Ha, i get behind this guy every once in awhile that stays at 45 in a 50, when everybody is getting off work and going home. That's not the bad part, though annoying, he stays at 45 when going thru town and school zone.
