How to transition to MIG?

/ How to transition to MIG? #71
I’ve only used 6011 and 6013 on the farm with my buzzbox in the “old days”.

I bought a box of 6010 just to play around with a few years ago but still haven’t gotten roundtuit.

6010 on a buzzbox prob a no go. Used to do some with 6011 but the spatter was crazy, 6013 or 7014 is much nicer. Maybe a tad less penetration but you can turn up the heat a bit to compensate. Haven't done any AC stick welding since I got my Dynasty 200dx.

I have some DC welders now that should run the 6010.

I think 6010 root with 7018 is the classic way for pipe. I have not done pipe class so I am over my head in pipe. In MIG class they make you weld pipe to plate in all positions using MIG. Sorry I forgot to say it was pipe to plate not pipe to pipe.

Nice welders.

When I took a Stick class in the late 70s we used Lincoln 250 amp AC,DC+,DC- machines. They were sweet welding machines with 6010 using DC. I think about buying one every now and then. They weight a lot and pull a lot of electricity so I have not.

If they were like mine you are right.

Totally sweet! Totally power suckers

That is very standard unless a different procedure is specified of which their is several in common use same as for structural. I have seen 7014 for subsequent to root also used if pipe can be rotated. In the old days we used 6010 throughout and sometimes 6013 for the final pass. Most pipe welders now do down-hand welds. Different techniques than the traditional up-hand.

I can see why, to me 12 o'clock to 6 is easier using MIG than 6 to 12. Pushing MIG up a pipe is kind of hard. I think MIG goes down hill easier than up overall.

I know it’s frowned upon, but I try to leave a little gap and downhill MIG whenever I can. I run it HOT and fast.

Just personal projects of course and nothing to code.
