I used metal floor joists in the garage and they were great. Very strong, but it's not very customizable after the fact. Comes pre-drilled, but drilling is a no-no if you need something else. If you encounter an issue you didn't anticipate, it's much harder to put something together to fix it. With wood, it's a lot easier to work with.

No offense, but I disagree. Metal stud carpenters know how to work the product; I am much more comfortable, and successful, with metal vs wood. (wood is not my forte ) But then, framing is framing.

Yeah when I laid out my dream two story shop which is now on the shelf due to permitting issues, I was figuring a 24ft span as I hate posts in the middle of a room. Wasn't considering metal studs though just looking at alternatives for joists.

A friend of mine (former boss) had a manufactured home built for her and her husband about 15 years ago. He's an engineer, and figured the loads, and the built the basement 24' wide by whatever length it was. He had slots and piers built into the middle of the 24' end walls and had a steel beam set in the slots the full length of the house. They set both halves on it and that was that. Full width basement end-end with no supports in the middle. The crane was on-site about 1/2 a day total. Set the beam and both halves of the house. Worked great. Cost a bit, but well worth it for that wide open space.

My last employer did extensive renovations many times over a 30 year period. They started using metal studs around 1997 I think. They could do anything with the metal studs that they could do with the wood. And it seemed to go really fast. I saw no difference in time VS wood. Good stuff. :thumbsup:

With my extensive experience of having to cut one 1 metal joist, it was a lot tricker than grabbing the circular saw and zipping it in about 4 seconds. Might have not been using the right tool(sawzall) but it took a good amount of time when compared to wood.

I致e never done anything with metal studs. How does the overall price compare? Purchase price, framing labor, wiring, plumbing labor, and drywall labor?

My house was built with metal studs on all interior walls. Freaks my stud finder out.

A sawzall or grinder is the obvious tool for a 1 time job but they make shears and nibblers that work pretty fast.

Metal studs on exterior walls will transfer the outside temperatures into the house faster then anything else you can use. For extreme insulation on walls, they are saying that wood transfers too much heat or cold and they are using double walls with a thermal break to stop that transfer. While this does work, I think it's too extreme for what you gain on a wood stud wall. On a metal stud wall, it might be needed.

Its all just a scam too, we have 3 lumber mills by us. Huge piles of logs outside. Mill running 3 shifts. Huge stacks of wrapped wood outside. There shipping less to raise prices. I need to go snap some pics.

Is it that, or do they just not have enough trucking capacity to move their product?

I have a friend that is the business of the same he/they make very good $$$$$$$$$.
