Anyone have a 17 super duty?

That is true, for major repairs, the cab has to come off the truck. That is really the only way to get to the engine because it is so cramped under the hood. Thankfully, Ford has designed everything for quick-release of the cab to make it easier. A lot of techs have mentioned that they remove the cab at times even when the procedure doesn't require it simply because it is easier to reach everything that way. It's really no bid deal now.

My Son has removed at least 30 for various repairs. Says it takes him an hour. Then he stands by the vehicle and works. The manufacturers that should be talked about are those that don't offer this convenience. :)

I'll have to ask him what the price is to remove the cab. He told me the cost . I don't remember, but best I remember it was expensive . I don't know what model truck they have right now. I'm quite sure it is the newer model with a ford engine. Not an old one with the Navistar engine. Quite a few fire departments around here went with a different brand truck within the last couple of years because they were having engine problems with the fords.

The engine upgrades can cost $2K for parts.

The cab removal is insignificant.

they were talking about one of the engines having problems related to aluminum head bolts :confused3:
Which engine was that ?

None.

It would be significant if it were 2K to remove it. I'll have to ask him what they were/are paying for this.

I have a 2007 F450 with the 6.0L International. It's been fully bulletproof'ed (not cheap) among other updates. Once completed, it's a very reliable engine capable of great power.

You'll pay somewhere around $4500 for parts and labor (depending on where you go) and i believe the custom shop that did mine only charged about 3 hours for cab removal & reinstallation. So... Probably somewhere less than $300 of the labor went into the cab lift.

Regarding the head bolts... The problem was two-fold. There were not enough, and they used TTY (Torque To Yield) bolts that would stretch to a measured tightness. The problem came when you'd build too much pressure on the heads (usually due to Oil Cooler and EGR issues stemming from silicates in the coolant) and stretching the head bolts. Once stretched, you'd have head gasket issues.

The fix was to use hardened head studs (along with removing the EGR system, replacing oil cooler, after flushing and replacing the gold coolant with green ELC).

Those are the major areas of attention. Yes it's an expensive repair. But once done, it's a good engine. You can also pick them up cheap because of the past issues.

Agreed! If it weren't for the safety requirements, I think we would likely see a tilting front end on pickups like the big rigs have.

Yep, color me jealous..... ;)

I'm a bit jealous too. My wife and daughter actually got to sit in it yesterday and I haven't even seen it yet! Signing papers today, then bringing it home tomorrow after the bedliner is sprayed in. Just in time to take it to STL for my daughter's field trip on Thursday. Gotta get those 1k (or close at least) break-in miles so we can go camping! :)

I think we are making two different points.

Just ballparking numbers here.

1. Doing 6.0L upgrades using cab removal method requires 20hrs labor.

2. Doing 6.0L engine upgrades without removing cab requires 25 hrs labor.

Which is mos cost effective method? Removal actually speeds up the process and saves costs. :)

And the mechanic is a lot less cranky because everything is easier to get to and his knuckles are left intact! :)

My dad has a fleet of 6.0 trucks. Every winter the trucks get fluid maintenance, with one of the fluids that gets replaced is the coolant. Because the coolant never got to the point of the silicates falling out of suspension and clogging up the oil cooler, we never had EGR issues. Those tucks never had any problems that other 6.0 that were neglected had.

You will not find a tougher bottom end on any diesel out there. That is one area international did a find job on, because they were originally built as a bus engine.

I am a huge fan of 6.0 diesel trucks, but one has to understand them to own them.
