Any special typeof steel? Special rod required for welding it on? How about MIG?

Robertm,

Are you going to get a new bucket? It sounded like you were thinking about it from your original post.

Nah, the "wowee" is just a dip in the cutting edge that I can beat back into place with a sledge hammer (probably a 2-pound hammer is more like it), but I just do not want to re-live the experience. The bend is not really a big deal, it's just that when I scrape the asphalt driveway off, I don't want to scuff it with the dip in the cutting edge. I am contemplating getting a welder soon, and I would like to reinforce the cutting edge, and add some hooks, so this looks like a god project to tackle. Does anybody have some input on where I should locate the new cutting edge to weld on? Under the existing one I assume. What about the new exposed edge of 1/4 or 1/2 plate (bar). That certaily won't help cutting into soil, or am I missing something here?

PM Henro . He's got a tooth bar that's very well designed .
The entire cutting edge of it fits over the buckets existing cutting edge . The teeth are then welded to that .
Sorry if the explanation was poor ,and that I don't know the maker of it . But I'm sure Bill ( henro) will help you out with a good description and maybe a PIC or two of it .
The only reson I didn't get one myself was that I wasn't aware of them until AFTER I alredy had a tooth bar of a different make /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif John

You cut the old cutting edge of with a torch and then weld on the new one.

The cutting edge on my 60" B2710 bucket is totally worn. I just put a tooth bar over it. Solved that problem for now.

However, had I wanted to change it, my dealer had generic weld-on cutting edge in stock for just over $1.50 per inch (ouch). All I would have to do is grind off the existing weld, remove the worn cutting edge, then weld in the new edge. I choose the tooth bar route.

Good idea. I can get some good used grader blades every once in a while. The ones we use are approx. 6" wide. Did you cut the bucket or place it over or under. Post a picture if you can. Thanks

I learned my lesson with Kubota buckets quite a while ago. The material buckets bend at the cutting edge. The last one I had on my 3710 had a hay spear in it most of the time. I broke it numerous times at the left hand edge between the cutting edge and the bucket side. It also had a "smile" in it

Kubota offers "material" buckets and heavy duty "round back excavation" buckets. This time I have the heavy bucket. It's actually a double wall bucket and it doesn't bend. Besides, the cutting edge is high carbon steel. The round back is more money but it's a better bucket by far than the light gage material bucket.
