Best Chainsaw Sharpner?

While I have always sharpened my saws manually with files, is there a better way for my occasional-use saw?

I'd stick with the file for occasional use saw chains.
That works for me even though I have an expensive Oregon sharpener set up....it was given to me

I have an electric one, kind of like a dremell. Mine runs off a 12 volt battery with little jumper cables. I only use it when the chain is really bad, I normally hand file.

I use a Sthil 2-in-1 sharpener. It's a 'manual' filing thingy that's very easy to use and gets the angle correct.

I have Timberline, not really satisfied with it, works ok with teeth facing away but not so good when teeth are facing towards the carbide, when they are the cabide like to push the tooth because the link holder on other side is not high enough to on the link rivets then the riets ride on top of the link holder cause the carbide to jam or not go in the tooth cutter.

I prefer the Grandberg sharpener, once on the bar it does a really good job fast.

I've had the forerunner of this tool for 30 years or so. Sold under the name Gamin. Works very well.

I have several different ones, but the only one I use is my Oregon grinder, I've had it for MANY years.

I REALLY like it, in fact I sharpened a chain with it today, it always does a GREAT job.

x 2 for the Sthil 2-in-1 sharpener. As Wagtail says, it is easy to get the angle correct. It also keeps the rakers at the correct height. I find it fast and it greatly improved my sharpening consistency.
The PFerd brand(which I believe makes the Stihl brand) used to be cheaper but it now seems to be the same price. Perhaps it was pressure from Stihl. I see there are similar devices from China which may be worth trying. I use a normal, simpler guide for touchups in the bush but may get one of the China ones just to see how it compares with the Stihl. I have recommended the Stihl 2-in1 to friends but most are put off by the price.

The Stihl is over $60 cdn on Amazon.CA and the China copies are about $35 cdn on Amazon.CA. Through Aliexpress the knockoffs are about $20 cdn to Canada including shipping.

Has anyone tried the 2 in 1's from China?

I have one as well. The timberline cutters fit just fine. The Timberline is a bit more advanced far as chain indexing goes, have one of them as well but still like the Gamin. Actually, my favorite is still the file and a stump vise.

I was skeptical but I took a chance on the stihl 2 in 1. It both sharpens the cutting edge and lowers the rake. You Must purchase a separate sharpener for each chain type, you can not simply change files.

Honestly, I致e used it at least 50 times this summer, hand cleared 3 acres of jungle.

There is also a lower cost knock off, not sure about the quality etc.

I致e got the echo 310 and stilh 310. Two very different saws but I bought a 2 in 1 for both.

I asked this question to a professional logger and his reply: "Real loggers use a file and unskilled logger wannabes use an electric sharpener". I don't know if he was serious or joking?

when I have difficult/large poorly located trees-I have a pro come in- They only use files. I have done pretty well with files-but need to learn when the file is used up better-usually find out when saw cuts at an angle.

Does that mean that ';semi-skilled loggers use the Gamin / Timberline? They aren't electric and are not a file either???:laughing:

Another vote for this. I always used hand files, but started using this last year. It's faster than individual files since it hits the rakers at the same time. It's also easier to hold and keep aligned at the correct angle. Does a great job, and it's all I use unless I do bad damage to the blade (then I have my saw shop sharpen it).
