Well, it's been long enough. I finally bought a thumb. Gentec HT1440 Thumb.jpg Gentec HT1440 Hydraulic Excavator Thumb 14"x4" (HT144) - Gentec Equipment

Tomorrow, hopefully this valve, #7120001 from https://www.hydraulicstore.com will arrive. I also bought the 24 volt coil. No worries now of a 12v valve getting ate up by 24 volts!

Weather permitting, I get the thumb welded on tomorrow afternoon.:cool2::dance1::thumbsup::licking:

How do you go about mounting a relief valve when it only has one (looks like) 5/32 inch hole through it? Relief Valve.jpg It is item number 7107333 from www.hydraulicstore.com It is a Prince RD-1850H relief valve.

Brandi, your solenoid valve will have 2 mounting holes (not including the 4 "stack" holes for multiple units) - what I would do is figure out where/how that solenoid will mount, then maybe tee off whichever port closes your thumb and mount the RD-1850 on that tee - you'll need to figure out what kind of adapters you need to go from NPTF to BSPP (if that's what you already have on the ex) - those relief valves are usually just hard piped to the rest of the system. I've installed a couple of that model on my 580B for add-ons, and they're fine being held just by piping. I came out of mine with NPTF-JIC's, 'cause that's what 99% of my fittings already were.

It helps A LOT to have a swivel or two on adapters, so you can get the NPTF threads tight and sealed and still point things (like the relief pressure adjust, RD out to tank) the way you need 'em.

Thanks Steve. I guess I will have to do that. I just schooled in aviation, that anything unsupported itself will vibrate and vibrations are bad up there. I'll pipe it straight and make a bracket to fit that one hole, just for grins.

If you have to use hose to connect it, use square U bolts to mount it.
That would be great. I was thinking two clamps bent aquare when I went to bed last night. Where can I buy something like this? Guess I can buy some thin steel strip and bed it at work this week. Thanks for the ideas.

Thanks. I'll look next time I am there. I bought a 1/8" x 3/4" strap today. I will bend it and try that, bolted down in a "hat" fashion. I'll have to trim the strap to clear the ports.

It is going slow here on all the plumbing. Lots of head scratching. I did get the fittings in and reused a Ford fuel pump bracket for a filter mount. I mounted the relief valve directly to the filter assembly and the relief will have 1 inch rubber under the relief. I'll drill and counterbore a hole for a bolt to hold the rubber in place underneath. CAT Thumb Relief Valve and Filter.jpgCAT Thumb Relief Valve and Filter Back Side.jpg I'm raising the air filter for the relief line to the tank so the line will go under the air filter outlet duct. I also need to replace the air duct, so I took it off and found this rusted filter outlet.CAT Air Filter Assembly.jpg I'm sure these are not cheap, if I can find one, so I will see if my local welding shop can repair the outlet.

I trimmed and cleaned the air filter outlet this week. I acquired a muffler shop pipe adapter from a local shop for free.;) I cut and slotted it to clear the indicator threads and clamped it on with a heavy truck duct clamp. Caterpillar has a new duct coming Monday. I then painted it all CAT yellow, after priming the insides with black rustoleum.

I will add clear silicone RTV to the slots, so no dirt can get sucked in.
