Conoco vs Rotella Oil

There's a lot of confusing information about motor oils on the internet and elsewhere, oil company marketing departments being a major source. Sadly the Conoco brand seems to be going away slowly since the unfortunate take over by Phillips Petroleum and the subsequent split-up of the company. I live in an Oklahoma town with the largest oil refinery in the State, which has been rebranded from Conoco to Phillips, and can no longer find Conoco products on most dealer shelves. End of rant!

I've linked a video about motor oils. It gets a bit technical in places, but has a lot of good general information even though it is slanted towards Amsoil products. Hydrocracked vs PAO Synthetic Motor Oil - YouTube

Hi Vic. Welcome to the conversation. I saw Amoco, Gulf, Shamrock, Sun, Fina, Conoco, Phillips 66, Texaco, Humble, Esso, and Hess to name a few I can recall disappear over the years. You mentioned Continental Oil Co. being bought by Phillips Petroleum. Phillips still in business or somebody buy them out? Thanks

The company, Conoco Inc., where I worked for over 30 years no longer exists. After the merger with Phillips Petroleum the company continued operations for a time as ConocoPhillips. Management then decided to split the merged company into two separate companies. The Upstream (Oil company jargon for Exploration and Production of crude oil and gas) segment is named ConocoPhillips and the Downstream (Refining, Transportation and Marketing) segment is Phillips. "Conoco" is still around only as a in-house brand for Phillips products in certain markets as are Union 76, Kendall, Red Line and others. Vic

I use Rotella synthetic in engines that sit around a lot between use. Like my diesel generator and my Honda powered water pump. Yes, the Honda is a gas engine.

I have been using non synthetic Rotella oil in my gas engines since 2006, when I started using it in my 18hp Honda powered Hustler Fastrac zero turn mower. My daughter's 2003 Ram 1500 has been using Rotella oil in it since we bought it in 2007. When she has someone else change her oil, she has to pull teeth to get them to put Rotella in it. They think she is wacko.

I picked Rotella, back in 2002 when I bought my first Dodge Cummins, because numerous 18 wheelers go millions of miles using Rotella. It works for me and is easy to find around here.
hugs, Brandi .

Thanks. I must not be in the " certain areas".

Well when i got a "rock bucket" (local slang for 18 wheel, combination dump) the tractor was a 1979 International cab over with over a million miles. Engine was the 800 cu in 400 hp Big Cam Cummins. Had one inframe overhaul during that time. Oil used was Rot T, (11 gallons per change) so that's where I started using Rot T in diesel engines.....and as a result of that Cummins experience, when I bought new tractors, Branson had Cummins licensed engines and I bought Bransons.

I didn't know Branson tractors have Cummins in them.

I have been using Rotella T6 in everything for about 5 or 6 years. The main reason is so that I only have to stock one oil rather than 5 or 6. I can put T6 in everything- boat engine, motorcycle, lawnmower, tractors, RTV and yes cars and trucks. I like that it is good for diesel and gas engines and 5W-40 works for me year round.
I also like that it is not that expensive.

I actualy switched more stuff over to t6 5w40 this year just for that fact. Only having to stock a few oils.
