I am looking at buying one of these units for my JD 4600 to be used on my PVC (Gardner Fence) Horse fence that I have on my property. Does anyone have any experience with these units and will they work reasonably with the PVC fence, etc? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't have experience with that type of fence but I do have a DR fence mower and it is useless for me. My lowest wire is lower than the DR can trim under due to the string head/hub underneath. My fault for not catching this but buyer beware.

If you have that much fence to trim you should consider buying a weed badger with the mowing head as it uses a low voltage limit switches to control the mowing heads ability to come close to fence posts. it will cost you more money but you will be able to weed along the fence line with the same attachment simply by exchanging the the mowing head with the weeding head.

The large diameter string that the dr has will destroy the pvc posts. I bought the tow behind one it works but not very well especially if your on a slope, I see they stopped selling it, i went back to a weed eater and wear a harness, that works better.

The DR was never what it was cracked up to be.

Any reason not to just round up under the fence?

I use weed and grass killer on the fence posts that I can't see from the house and weed eat the rest around 250 posts a few times a year. My thought was the dr would cut my time, it didn't, I think all the dr stuff is junk.

I have their walk behind brush mower with a Kawasaki on it and it is a good piece of equipment. But the under fence mower, no so.

So would your lowest wire allow a Wright Fence Mower to fit under it?..."The bottom wire, board, or pipe should be at least 7 inches from the ground for clearance."

The first version of their PTO trimmer got a lot of lousy reviews and did have some design flaws. They apparently corrected the problems in their second version, but I never saw enough new reviews on their site to make me comfortable to buy one. Look over their website and see if there are any new reviews since mid 2015, and that might tell you if the new version is any better.

No, Whoever put up the original fences had the low wire at 4 to 5". No idea why unless they were really trying to keep the animals from eating under. Either that or the fence posts sunk down :D

My fault for not thinking of that, I just did not expect the big hub under the trimmer head.

This is all great feedback - thanks. I don't mind using Roundup combined with whipping by hand twice per year. Even with 4000'+, this is workable for me. The stuff about DR looks too good and their ads reminded me of something I've seen on RFD commercials. I thought it was interesting that they decided to offer the 6 month free trial w/ return... but that seemed to have financial hitches as well.

Thanks again, folks!

I am in horse country. Miles and miles of plank fence. I have yet to see one of those trimmers in use. It is a zero turn on the outside of the fence, a bat wing on the inside and a few guys with weedeaters getting what is left.

That's been part of their marketing program for decades, at least as long as I've been aware of the company. But as you say, comments here have pointed out that the return is far from free.

I am planning on using the generic with the additive that claims 365 day protection. That will likely result in spraying once in the spring and once in the fall. Obviously just along the fence lines. I can live with the look of dead grass/dirt under the fence line to not have to use a string trimmer or buy another piece of equipment.

I don't get suckered often but I did this time. I bought mine used for about 1/2 price but still.

I bought the one from Titan, have only trimmed about 1000 feet of fence line so still in the learning stage. Not overly impressed, but much easier on my back than a weedeater. Do not back up with it on the ground ! Don't ask how I know this.
