Best check the engine specs closely before investing in a turbo unit.
As a general rule the cam/s timing via the lobes over lap and lift are much different between turbo and non-turbo versions are among other things that differ of the seemingly otherwise same engine.

Have you really thought this through?
How much more power are you gaining vs the cost? And are you SURE it's going to meet what your expectations and needs are?

Myself, I'd take others advise here and trade toward a machine that would deliver what I required to begin with.

Would you buy it with less than 100 hrs on it if you had no idea it ever had a turbo?
Yeah you would.
Fred
True, BUT if you leave the valve cover on, I would see the plug in the valve cover and ask questions about it...
And, if selling, I would disclose its history. To do otherwise could open the seller up to a lawsuit for misrepresentation if something were to happen down the road that was caused by the turbo.

Given the smoke, power, and cold start problems I would believe there is something wrong with it. Bad fuel, plugged filter, bad hydro filter, timing, could be anything. Need to eliminate the small things first. You may be surprised at the power loss you get with some of the little things.

So look let's keep my integrity out of the deal and stay on topic right, can we just try this once? I see used cars come in every day just total JUNK that a new car dealer pushed onto a consumer and these dealers have NO problem doing it, neither would most tractor dealers. You would be surprised to see a car with 100,000 miles come in and someone has scrawled on the engine in crayon "Timing Belt 95k" and a date next to it just to find it was never replaced. I see it all the time. IF I traded anything in I wouldn't care about the history do you think any dealer does? Of course not they make their own story up. Don't be too na?e Aaron it happens everyday.

Maybe if I posted that I will dress homeless person in front of Lowes and get enough coin to go inside and buy the PVC pieces I need to plumb up the high pressure side :) You think PVC will take 8 psi? Just kidding but that is some funny stuff right there mister! Drum roll for me.

THE TURBO IS GOING ON. I don't use the machine that much, ten years might get 750 hrs. if I keep it that long.

Darn you guys are ruthless on this forum.

Fred...filters are all new I just did the 50 hrs. service.

Resale? Let's suppose that somewhere out there a first time buyer has a tuner car background. He already knows 'more is better' (Orange air cleaner, gawping tail-pipe extension, etc) I'd think he'd be all over a tractor with something extra, esp if it offered more power than other L3940s. (I doubt he'd have it dyno-tested.) So leaving the turbo on it might be a selling point some day, ... that's assuming the long shot that our OP isn't happy with the results.

Nowadays, the best reason to do something seems to be that someone else did it and has nothing but good to say about his effort. (LASIK eye surgery, accessory sunroof, DVD player, 'style' vs an old-school haircut, or that Enzyte guy on TV....) Can't say for sure about the rest of them, but I believe Fred will give us an honest appraisal once he's got 'er up & running.

Well I snapped a few photo's for you. It's a little hard to get a good photo because I have the stack conversion kit on mine. It's going to be interesting to see how you do this turbo install. Your going to need some wicked fab skills to make support brackets and such for the turbo. With it's weight your not going to want that thing bouncing around. The manifold that holds the turbo on this 5740 is pretty beefed up. You can see the turbo drain in the last photo.

Stock Kubota wastegate is set at 7 psi. I would doubt it will be an issue. I would bet the head gasket is the same one as the Bobcat S160.

Fred
I'd start at 3psi and not go over 6psi if you need that much power.

EXCELLENT pix just what I needed. I want to assume on your 5740 the oil filter sticks out a bit because of the oil cooler? Mine has no cooler therefore the side cover might need to be modified which I would like to avoid unless I had another side cover. My turbo is much smaller than that. Your last picture shows a plug just behind the tractor frame near your turbo drain, this is what I was assuming is the plug for the drain, I was wrong.

Thank-you so much for taking the time.

Yup I'll start low psi. Checking the timing before I dive in too deep.

Nope. The oil filter if I remember correctly is pretty much the same as it was on my 4240. The biggest difference on the 5740 is the exhaust manifold. The two lines you see on the lower engine block are related to the turbo. Maybe one is an oil feed line and the other a drain?
There must be a coolant line there as well but the shop was busy today so I just snapped the photos quick for you. If you need anymore just let me know.
Your welcome and good luck.

Good luck Fred looking forward to following your progress.
