I guess that's what they believe to be the problem, if I take it out would there be something obvious to know, it is I fact the steering selector valve that's broken/the problem?

Hello, I'm new here and joined to get some help. Although I hope to buy a tractor in the future, right now I am borrowing my friends Toolcat 5600. I was using it today to move some dirt, while in 4 wheel steering, I made a turn after dumping, and the steering stopped all together. I can turn the steering wheel in either direction as much as I please and no movement what so ever. all the tires are at close to max turn so I can't try and put it into 2 wheel drive. All the hydraulics work i.e. bucket and bed, but the steering. when turning the wheel, at a couple points in sounds almost like it is binding for a second and then is free again, when it does make the "binding" sound, the wheels seem to momentarily move until the "binding" sound is gone. Any ideas on what this might be would be greatly appreciated! I look forward to hearing from you.
You say the bed still works, try raising it all the way up and hold it till you hear the relief valve, then down till you hear the relief valve. Do it a few times, see if it moves and sounds the same each time.

Then try turning the steering wheel.

Mine won't steer unless it is moving, but the steering wheel won't move. There is a thread here about that.

Found it: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/toolcat/134290-steering-while-stopped.html

Since it is controlled by battery voltage, replacing it may not fix the problem. I learned to troubleshoot when I was very young, I don't throw parts at a problem, I use test equipment to find the bad part.

I was hoping some of the Bobcat Techs would see this and help you out. Guess you could call some other dealers service departments and see if they have had this problem.

Thanks for the responses. Faxman I'm with you, although this put me in a time crunch since I have a barn going up Friday, and still needed to clear a pad for the lumber (barn pad is finished).

So after I spoke to bobcat, and ordered the part, back to the tractor I went. I traced all the wires going to the steering valve, found no chafing, put the bucket down and raised the front end off the ground and turned the wheel, kept hearing that "binding" sound. So I followed the sound this time. I'm embarrassed to say I found the problem right under the dash. The crimp bolt from the steering wheel rod that connects to the shaft going through the firewall had backed it's way out just enough that the teeth were no longer grabbing. Hope this helps someone else, I canceled the order on the part, and the cat is running like a champ again. I really appreciate all the help from everyone, this seems like a great place, I will indeed stick around!!

Thanks for letting us know what solved the problem AND, taking a pic. Glad it was a cheap, relatively easy fix.

Yep, I should have asked him if he could turn the steering wheel with the engine not running. You can't turn it very much.

I went out and tried it with the engine off. With a lot of effort the steering wheel will move about 3/4 of a turn, the front wheels will move slightly, the rear wheels don't move, even though the switch was in all wheel steer when parked.

I wondered where the oil was going when he said he could turn the steering wheel freely in either direction.

For future reference, my 2012, 5610 series F has the same steering system.

And a test pressure connector.

Hello,

New poster, and trying to find information about others who may have same symptoms I have. I have a 2005 SN# 424711985.. (don't know what version it is so I thought I would give the SN# to aid).

History, we recently 40hours ago, replace both drive motors with reman motors from Loader Parts Source.. TC is driving well, but it does not seem to have as much power as I recall when I first got it.

I also notice that every so often, my lifting ability seems weird.. weird meaning that if I try to lift while going forward, the lifting is not as strong.. sometimes, even when I stop moving forward, my i cannot lift what is in the bucket (dirt). Sometimes, I just put in reverse, the forward, then it seems to slowly strain and gets the bucket up. After it goes up about 2-4 inches from where it was, then it lifts fine.

I also notice that if I am turning while changing directions (reverse to forward, or forward to reverse), there is about a second or so that the steering seems to stop.. but then it goes back to normal afterwards.

Any suggestions: I checked the fluid, plan to change the hydraulics fluid this week and cut the filters again.. was going to wait for about 50 hours on the reman drive motors but I think I will do it now.

Any suggestion on what to check, or keep an eye out for?

Thanks in advance,

Well you won't get a reply from UFM82, since he hasn't been active since 2007, but I can tell you your 5600 is a B series.

Maybe someone with B series experience will see this and can answer your questions, if not, start a new thread.
