Mahindra 5155 Anyone?

   / Mahindra 5155 Anyone? #102
I have a 5145 on order, 2 to 3 weeks out if all goes to plan.
I chose the 5145 for several reasons:
1. I was looking for a 2600 series but being a big guy the 5100 was much roomer and the reach up to the brakes/clutch was easier.
2. about a $4k price diff from the 5155.
3. my current ford 2000 is only 33hp and I'm on flat land near sea level so I do not need the additional power.
4. the turbo adds a lot of complexity to the engine.
5. the hot and fast spinning turbo will be the first thing to go out IMO.
6. I do not plan to run any large PTO loads or pull any large ground engaging implements at any real speed.
7. I like the fact that this is the same engine block/drivetrain as the 55 so should be more durable.

I looked at LS, Branson, TYM, JD, Kubota etc. for a 35 to 50 hp tractor with at least 2000# FEL lift capacity, the JD and Kubota were about 2x the cost for what I wanted. The LS was $5K cheaper for a tractor that was almost as comfortable, it had a turbo engine and the dealer was a lot further away but the killer was that LS will not allow customers to acquire a service manual, that killed it for me although the dealer was a good guy.

I'm just planning to clear brush/garden/build projects so the 5100 series is way more tractor than I need. The weight and lift capacity is a big plus, I ordered a 3rd function, grapple and pallet forks with it. I had to stretch the budget and CFO screamed at me a little, but ok.

It surprised me that the cost of the 5145 was less than the 2660 that I was looking at, not to mention there was a lot of stuff on the 2660 that IMO would be additional maintenance in the future, I mean seriously a plastic dial on the fender to set the engine speed? in a cab tractor maybe but I would be replacing that every time I went thru any brush. I tend to drive something until the wheels fall off and then duct tape them back on, the hour meter on my hand me down ford 2000 stopped working at 6000 hours lol.

BTW I bought the 5100 series service manual from Bills tractors (I think). I printed it out, took it to my dealer and compared it to the official (which you cannot buy yet) service manual and they are exactly the same right down to the unreadable text on the wiring diagrams.

Yeah drain it into a clean receptacle and put it back in when your done. Or just change in at 50 hours and skip changing the fluid at the first scheduled fluid change. I did the latter on my last tractor at 50 hours. Most of the break in “crap” is likely going to be in that strainer and the filter at 50 hours so I just changed the oil then and figured I was good to go with just regular filter changes for a while. Plus I live in a cold climate and do use my tractors in the winter. So when I changed the fluid I upgraded to semi-synthetic. It flows much better at low temperature.

Andy, do you remember specifically what you used for fluid? Brand, ect.? Just curious, I've been looking for a replacement hyd. fluid like that and haven't had any luck finding it locally.

Walt, I use Schaeffer’s Simplex Supreme. It’s a synthetic blend and I’ll tell you that the tractor hydraulic system is much happier with it during winter time. My local NAPA store got it for me in 5 gallon pails at a good price. Maybe you can look at that option where you’re at? I ran it in my previous Mahindra and I run it in my old Yanmar 2210D. And when I change fluid in my 5155, I’ll run it in that too. Hope this helps

For those that have their tractor, I cannot get the operator manual yet, what are the scheduled maintenance items, the shop manual indicated that there is a timer set for 50hr and 350hr after that but does not indicate what needs to be done at those times.

Thanks

Awesome, yeah that sounds like exactly what I need. That cold fluid hydraulic pump whine is like nails on a chalkboard to me imagining the strain the pump goes through. Thank you sir!

If you have the serial number of your tractor, you can go to the owners-login on the Mahindra site and download three manuals but not the service manual.

does anyone know the history of the engine in the 5100 series, to me it looks like the engine out of the 4540/4550, is that correct?

You’re correct. Also same engine as used in the 1538/1640 and 2538/2638. Obviously it has different tuning and for the 5155 they added a small turbo.

Andy thanks for the info, it is interesting that they were getting 50hp out of this engine in the 4550 without the turbo but dropped it back to 45 with out the turbo in the 5145. but anyway i like that this is not a new engine and should be very reliable, i hope the rest of the drive line holds up also.

Will someone take a photo of their PTO shaft housing? I removed my cutter and I noticed three bolts sticking out unprotected. I’m wondering if something fell off or not. I circled the bolts in red in the attached photo. Yes, I know everything is a little dirty at the moment.

Those are the bolts that hold on the plastic PTO shaft cover that should have been on the tractor when you got it from the dealership. There are Nylock type nuts on there and you loosen them a little and give the cover a quarter turn and it comes off. Then those nuts stay there if you ever wanted to put the cover back on for any reason.

Thank you. I’m thinking it could have fallen off. Do I need to be concerned? Should I go ahead and order a replacement?

Nothing to worry about at all. If you plan to keep the tractor outside I would just smear some grease on your PTO shaft to keep it from rusting. I don’t think anyone actually uses those covers once they take them off for the first time. How do you like the new tractor so far? Any observations for the rest of us new owners?
