Thanks, This will realy show me what I need to do. My wife Michele just came back with some info from 84 lumber for me to look over. We are thinking of doing it our selves, but may farm out some of the work.

P.S. Boy, we could save some money if we had a bigger tractor with a loader/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

A friend of mine is planning to build this spring, he is looking at a company called miracletruss (www.miracletruss.com) It uses steel trusses with wood girts. Looks pretty interesting>

Heehaw,

It really makes you wonder about the quality of the treatment process sometimes. I had to sort through a bunch of 5X5 posts just to get a dozen or so decent ones. You know, just about every new deck around here I see built has CCA posts which makes me wonder about how long they will last. I guesss putting them on concrete footers helps the rot problem considerably.

Paul, my grandfather had a Butler machine shed constructed now 21 years ago. It's all steel sitting on concrete footings. That thing is still solid as a rock. I don't know if they make barns in the size you want but it may be worth checking into. I've thought about a steel barn next time, eliminates the structural rot/termite problem.

i am pretty sure the prices i put on here are for enclosed buildings; $7000 for a 30x50 ; if you price the material alone, it will be close to that..i talked to the ex-neighbor about the 40-60 he had built; heres how it went; the 3 man crew showed up on friday, saw they were going to have to have a jack hammer to dig the holes so they left; returned the next tuesday, and left friday, with the thing completed. i sure don't wanna work that hard anymore..

Paul

I didn't have my tractor yet when we built the barn so I rented a bobcat for two days. Only had to go down 12" on one corner and move the spoils to the opposite corner to level the site. Also got the auger attachment with the bobcat.

If you do it yourself, you WILL need a tractor or bobcat-mounted auger. Depending on your soil conditions, you'll need to go down a minumum of 4' for the poles.

Yep - sounds to me like you need a bigger tractor... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Ok, another dumb question. How long do the post last? Don’t they rot out? Has anyone poured cement peers, and put the posts on top of them?

Paul,
I don't know how long the treated poles will last. But I have a 20 x 120 building that has 10" red cedar poles. We built it in 1972 and the poles look just like they did in 1972.
