WVBill; did the other four books mention concrete?? the 2 treated post the i had rot out in less than 10 years were 6inch diameter post, in concrete, with gravel in the bottom, i think they were just poorly treated because they were almost hollow all the way to the top; the concrete had nothing to do with the rot..but it sure was a bear to get the concrete out so i could replace the post..that alone taught me i don't want to use concrete again.

I can't recall exactly what each said but I do remember one other thing mentioned somewhere in one or more of them:
The load bearing capacity of a pole depends on the surface area of the pole in contact with the ground. Not the butt end surface area, the side surface area. You can increase that surface area by either burying the pole deeper, using a bigger diameter pole or pouring concrete that is also mechanically connected to the pole (i.e. by spikes in the pole that set into the concrete).
Each book gave charts that listed pole diameter, soil type and burial depth requirements for the design weight loads.

If you're interested, go to amazon.com and search on "pole building". I think I bought most of them and found something useful in each one. These are the two I found most useful:

I just had a 24x54 building put up, since I didn't have anything else to store my cars in, I had a builder put it up. This was built on a rocky, steep ledge, so I built it on a floating concrete slab. Thick steel brackets were used to attach the laminated posts.
24x54 11' eave height, 6-12 roof pitch
12" overhang with soffit
54' gutters on both sides
3 10 foot roof vents
Insulated roof
2 steel insulated service doors
3, 8'x9' insulated steel overhead doors, 2 openers
4 windows,
100 amp electrical (this gets expensive!!)
Total $ 21,000

I am putting up another building...but I am building to save some cash.

WVBill, that is true up to a point. If you are going with a two level or loft there is a lot more to it, a little less with just roof loading. The biggest thing on any type column (steel, brick, or even plastic) is the unbraced length. The type of connections at the top and bottom have a large impact. It can change the effective unbraced lenght from a factor of 0.5 to 2.1.... I know I have told you more than you wanted to know, but this is one thing I have done for the last thirty years so I can play with my tracrtors now.

Heehaw,

I quit using round posts a long time ago. Round post are from round trees, and a 6 in Dia. tree is a pretty young tree. The soft sap wood on the outside decays very quickly. I use split cedar and no cement, cement will absorb water and keep the post continually wet. I soak the post in 15 gal barrel of cresote for a few days and tamp it in good.

I can't help it but...
You said:

Then I most assume square posts come from "square" trees? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I'm sorry just couldn't resist... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

John,

<font color=blue>"I'm sorry, .......I couldn't resist"</font color=blue>

Left myself open for that one. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gifGotta get up pretty early to put the sneak on you.

<font color=blue>square posts come from "square" trees? </font color=blue>

Your exactly right and that it why the square ones are more expensive, not many square trees around anymore. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I should have been more clear and my comment was with respect to cedar. The small round cedar posts are not mature growth and rot quickly.

We have also been thinking of a pole barn but the wife and I disagree on the size. She wants smaller and I want bigger. What size/door configuration would you recommend? We are looking to store our L3710 and all its attachments (brush hog, scraper blade, and box blade), 12 ft tandem trailer, boat and trailer, and log splitter. Plus of course the myriads of other stuff we all seem to accumulate. Any suggestions would be helpful.
