Man that stump has to be close to three feet in diameter. It must have put up a heII of a fight.

It seems that the trunk of the tree is a bit larger diameter then the rear wheel of your 790. And those rears are fair size.
I know what you mean about those "potatoes". I have more then I care to deal with.
Did you turn it into firewood?

Hydraulic cylinder just arrived, waiting on the chain and shackles. I'm gonna have to get a couple yokes made for attaching them to the cylinder ends. Andy's setting me up with some long hoses and connectors. Let the games begin..

It seems to have a natural place to ride, thought I'd have to make a cradle but looks like a rope around it will do.. the weight of the cylinder plus the hundred something pounds of chains will be welcome back there. Still waiting on chain, shackles, hooks, and plates to join them all up.

I have learned that "fresh" stumps can be easier to pull or dig then older stumps. The roots of fresh ones seem to be more pliable where as older stumps the roots are like rock and hard to break or dig through.

Wedge

Strange, I noticed the exact opposite...

I sure wish I left my stumps 6' tall. Plenty more to come tho.. Maybe if it won't pull the 10 inchers, it'll put enough stress to them that I can dig with my father's little BX on the other side and get them to go. Anything to not have to deal with the big 2wd on the muddy slope..

Hey Jake, no one ever leaves 6 foot stumps since too much of the good wood is left behind..I know because I have done it to myself before...:)

Ya know Bob, if it all works right I may be able to drop the tree, yank the stump, then cut it all up. If not, at least I have more ballast for the grapple..

Can you do this on fresh stumps? My gut says they probably have to dry out first to suck up the diesel.

gg

I haven't tried it on a stump less than a year old. I would imagine a fresh cut stump may be too juicy. The year old stump soaked up the fuel well enough.

Had some plates made up today to go between the shackles and piston, the shear cuts that 1" like butter.. they punched the holes and elongated them with plasma, I guess I'll have to donate some blood. Hooks are back-ordered but the chain arrived. I'll have to use the wrap it around the stump method of adjustment for now. Anybody know the best way to cut 1/2" alloy chain?

Comin' together!

Do I have this right: You're going to wrap a chain around the stump to be pulled, attach that chain to one end of the hydraulic cylinder, & attach the other end of the cylinder to another chain chained to another stump? & pull horizontally?

The cylinder will lay horizontally on the box blade as you showed while it's operating?

Seems like it should work ... if I have that right.

Now ... if you could modify your plan a little, by adding a snatch block: Pick 2 big "anchor" stumps close together, attach your end chains around those, & attach a snatch block to the stump-to-be-pulled (using a 3rd chain), I think that doubles (almost) your pulling power.

Either way I'm anxious to learn how well it works!

Oh, & would you include ~prices when you post about the parts you've got?

I'm just carrying it on the boxblade, I got 20' hoses so I can get out of the way..
The thing about chain is you need some big chain to take the force, so I bought 1/2" grade 70 and I'm gonna use it doubled. That almost gets me to the 28,000 lbs that the cylinder should pull, I'm counting on some safety factor built in, as funny as that may sound.
I think I have about $500. in it so far. Tomorrow I'll see if it works.

Plasma or a cut off wheel.
