2016 Nissan Titan

Looks like the last generation Ford...

Yup. First thing I said was "That looks like a Ford!" Must be the grille and headlights.

Interesting that they are doing it as a "Heavy Half"

I'd say they went after the Ford Eco Boost, and the Dodge Eco diesel. Sales numbers will tell the story. A lot of folks here really cut down the Dodge Eco Diesel, but their sales numbers tell the real story. I thought it was a good idea for their line. I think it has hit it's market point dead center.

I'm on the fence about this one. Power wise, it will be compared to the HD's and will fall very short. In stock trim, my '06 beats it by 50HP and 100lb ft of torque, and that's not even close to the 2015 numbers, for any brand. That said, someone wanting a 1/2 ton ride, with nearly 3/4 ton tow power, will be jumping on this. After all, the engine IS a Cummins. That alone will sell big numbers.

To me, the telling tales, will be, pricing, and mileage numbers. Folks either want a diesel or don't, and there have been a ton of newer diesel vehicles introduced to the US market, and I think rightly so. I don't think the 12K rating will hurt it as much as DP thinks, because the RV market is flooding with 5th wheels with a GVWR of right around or under 11K, and this gives them plenty of wiggle room.

My '06 HD is rated at 14,200, and my 2015 35ft Open Range 5th wheel has a GVWR of 12,400, (scaled weight was 11,400 with 85 gal of fresh water in the tank) not very much above that rating. As many guys pointed out here, the newer 1/2 tons are probably closer to a stock '06 HD than we realize. That said, with my tuning and improvements, now I am getting right about 400 RWHP and over 700lbft at the wheels, so it isn't close. Tow ratings don't change with HP but ease of towing sure does.

When so many folks are getting into 5th wheels and do not want a bone jarring ride, a 12K rating, good mileage when towing and when empty, are going to be very appealing. It's not a truck for everybody, but that's why they make so many different models.

If it's priced with Ford's Eco Boost, and Dodge's Eco Diesel, I think they will have trouble making enough of them. Both of the other trucks have done well so far, but NEITHER has a Cummins diesel. There's a LOT of pull in that name. If it's priced right, I think it will outsell both of them. I'm gonna guess about 53K loaded.

With all that said, if they didn't beef up the rest of the drive train enough to handle that Cummins, it will be costly to Nissan.

Seeing how I was replying to Diamondpilot, who is also the OP, and knowing he is currently driving a Ford, I found it appropriate to make the comparison. It is a conversion between the two of us and doesn't involve you.

If you didn't want others in "your conversion" why would you post in a public forum?

Hot buttons:

It needs to work awesome with my iPhone 6.
It needs a flat rear floor for my dogs.
Amp Power Boards must be able to be fitted.
It must have a heated steering wheel.
Heated and cooled seats are expected.
Auto headlights, and auto temperature.

The diesel needs seriously cold weather package: fuel warmer plug in and coolant fuel warmer.

Ford's heavy half already has higher specs.

I wonder what Dodge is doing?

Current RAMs have all that including the ECOdiesel. And, I will never own another vehicle without the heated steering wheel. Getting old sucks and the arthritis in my finger joins is relieved by the heat.

The Titan has a huge mountain to climb over, likely something it can not do. A new unproven engine, and Aisin transmission that we don't know about yet, no pricing info or payload info yet. Nissan sold just under 13,000 trucks last year, that is about the number of F150s Ford sells each week. Good luck to them.

If you look at road hunters post history you would understand my reasoning. Any time someone makes a comparison using Ford, he puts out that exact post. I made the comparison because Diamondpilot had deep knowledge of Ford and would make the same comparison.

SSDD. Never fails on truck threads. Nothing can come close to the Ford in their eyes.

Kudos to Nissan for following through on such a neat project.

I see some reasonable comparisons, but nobody slamming Nissan. I don't get the reason for the first lines of the post.

The drivetrain sounds pretty beefed up to me. 9.75 inch front axle, 13 inch rear. Recirculating ball steering setup etc.
