What's your average mpg?

..Fill tank with fuel. Reset a trip meter. Drive. Refill tank with fuel. Divide miles driven by gallons filled. Miles-per-gallon.

The fool display on the instrument panel will always give a better number than the actual calculated MPG because it makes the manufacturer look better. Actually makes a liar of them.
Been my experience as well across 3 F250/350's, Ford Fusion, Jeep JK, and a VW TDI. The Display MPG is always higher than actual by about 3%-10%.

I have a '23 Subaru Forester Wilderness. Odometer reading is 66,000 miles. I'm averaging between 30-32 MPG. Live in the southern tier of NYS and seldom drive expressways. Most of my driving routes take me along the finger lakes shores where the roads are flat and traffic is light. Being retired I try to avoid rush hour traffic and use the cruse control set at 60 MPH often.

Every vehicle I’ve checked the lie o meter was close except one.
I'll take it a step farther, and say I'm amused there are people out there who actually care. I'll occasionally look at the reported mileage number on the trip computer of a new car, out of idle curiousity. But I have never cared enough about the reported number to actually check its accuracy. I'm certainly not choosing my vehicles by achievable milage.

Dodge 2500 with 5.9 Cummins = 18 mpg, Jeep Wrangler with 3.6 V6 = 22 mpg

In reality they'll drink however much they need to, to perform whatever task they're asked to do.

I became "addicted" to checking mileage during the three something years I was towing an enclosed trailer back and forth 1,000 miles every two weeks. Heck, what else is there to think about on boring interstates?

Then, and now, my infatuation with actual mileage is because I hate to stop, so the better the mileage the fewer stops. Or the larger the fuel capacity the fewer the stops.

Anyway, it has become a kind of a "hobby", but realistically, if I wanted to get better mpg numbers (much better) I would simply drive more slowly. But what's the fun it that? And arriving up to several hours later than I could isn't fun either.

You'd find me totally hilarious then. I have multiple vehicles and each has a log book inside. EVERYTHING I do to the vehicle - add fuel, change a windshield wiper, change oil, etc. is logged with the mileage and date. Then I enter the fuel information into an Excel spreadsheet that calculates the exact fuel mileage and how much I've paid for fuel for that vehicle. When I say that my Toyota 4Runner gets 22.77 mpg overall you can bet that's correct for the life of the vehicle. Here's a screen shot of a portion of the Toyota's spreadsheet:

All that information may not mean much in the short term. But after several years (I tend to keep vehicles for many years) that history is invaluable - and it sure helps when I finally sell the vehicle. I don't choose my vehicles by fuel mileage either - but I love knowing exactly what the fuel mileage of each vehicle is.

I keep log books for most of my vehicles, but while most everything is noted I have never entered the cost of a fill-up, or the cost of parts or fluids.

Largely because it costs whatever it costs, but also because it'd be depressing to now know much.

Emmm. I'm on the other side of the pond. When Mr Putin went into Ukraine, I changed my car to a B class diesel Mercedes, with the 1461cc, just under 90 cu. inch. I'm not going to put how many mpg I'm getting but it's regular over 70. 116hp at 70mpg, that'll do me. I've run diesels as a car for the last 25 years or so, and found modern diesels are very good. And I am still a long way from going electric, despite the pressure from the government.

I sold my 97 Dodge 2500, 4x4, 5.9 Cummins, ext cab, long bed, with a fiberglass cap. I lived in the Detroit area, going to the UP of Mich, from Detroit to the bridge at 78 mph I would get 19.7 actual mpg. From the bridge to my home town I would get 22-25 mpg actual mpg driving 62 mph, depending on how many RV's etc I had to pass on a two lane highway.

Had a 30 mph headwind gusting to 50 mph this morning. I only managed about 24mpg compared to the usual 35+ this time of year.
