    Gardens for 2021 season

Nice! I planted potatoes in a tilled area and didn't stay on top of the weeds, I knew full well what would happen, before and after pic.

    Gardens for 2021 season

Working on prepping the site for our fall pumpkins and sunflowers. Tilled and tarped an 80x80 area last fall. Half billboard tarps and the other half 4 mil plastic, I couldn't keep the 4 mil from blowing off no matter what I tried, I recently tilled and planted cowpeas on the uncovered area...

    Gardens for 2021 season

Thank you! Surprisingly I don't have much help, my significant other gets out about once a month a helps for a few hours. Gardening is my hobby, and I spend a lot of time doing it. You'd be surprised how much you can get done putting 10 hours a week in.

    Bush hog setup

Back to the garage for me. I made the mistake of not knowing how to properly sharpen the blades, and now I get to do it the proper way, which I've been told is flat bottom, 45 degree angle top, and that's it, no sharpening past that. I got those blades knife sharp, due to several dings in the...

Anyone build their own small no till seed drill?

I'm wondering at what height/thickness I would need to mow then till the cover crop in? I tried tilling grass in not to long ago and ended up with a mess in the tiller, had to grab the mower, then till. And thanks for the recommendation on the clover. And also wow, I have had the Austrian peas...

Anyone build their own small no till seed drill?

I've got a chain harrow that I was planning to use for that purpose, I'm wondering if the cheaper ATV seeders are worth much, either the ones with the trough that you drag, or the one you mount and it electronically spin seeds, there are quite a few options for under 200$

Anyone build their own small no till seed drill?

That's awesome! Good job man, that's exactly what I'm looking to do. I already tilled and broadcast cowpeas a week or so ago, they are coming up nicely. I would like a seeder that I can plant in a mowed down crop, so as to not have bare soil ever. I'm trying to choke out the grasses with cover...

    Canopy

That's awesome! I need to build a canopy for mine, but am going to have to make it easily detachable due to having to put the rops down to pull it in the garage, and wanting to keep it out of the weather. That's really cool it has the fan up top, and your light setup looks awesome as well. I...

Anyone build their own small no till seed drill?

This isn't actually mine, I just screenshoted it of the internet. I'm hoping others might have converted some for theirs. I'm considering using a small cultivator for mine, setting up the box on top and add wheels and a pully and belt for the seeder, but I'm not sure what would work best for The...

Anyone build their own small no till seed drill?

I've got an old disc harrow, a welder, and scrap steel, plus enough southern ingenuity to try to scrap together a small drill for cover crops at my place. Seems most used drills are expensive or very old, and I'm wondering if anyone has built one that worked pretty well? Pic for attention.

Anyone successfully gotten rid of Bermuda through tillage?

I've had great luck on smaller scales tilling then hand picking out pieces of roots, then covering with weed fabric. But im not trying to spend all that time doing that for large areas. I'm hoping I can till every few weeks during the summer allowing the roots that end up on top enough time to...

Anyone successfully gotten rid of Bermuda through tillage?

I purchased some roundup from Lowes to spray some areas that weren't going to be used for growing and it didn't seem to affect the grass other than turning it a shade of yellow for a week, but then bounced back. I mixed according to the directions. Is there a specific type or mixture you would...

Anyone successfully gotten rid of Bermuda through tillage?

Looking to prep future gardening plots with my new tractor and tiller, and my grandfather said if I keep tilling eventually I can be rid of the Bermuda. Anyone successfully done so? Tips and tricks? I know spraying would greatly help but I'm not keen on the idea of chemicals unless absolutely...

    Light bars!

I was so impressed with my front light bar that I installed a few weeks ago that I ordered 2 more small ones for the rear. The front bar kit came with a wiring harness that had an extra set of wires for a second light, so I ran them along the wiring harness in a loom to the back and spliced both...

    Gardens for 2021 season

We have grown veggies for market, and personal consumption for years. After the pandemic and seeing how many people needed things outdoors to do (lakes were full everyday, not enough stuff for the hoards of a booming population here in north Texas). We decided having a you pick operation would...

    Box blade width?

I also have a heavy duty chain harrow, the yard is 1 acre so it's not small, and at this point ripping up the lawn/weeds is not an issue due to the terrible condition its in, it is a marsh unless we haven't had rain in a few weeks. You think the chain harrow would do well spreading it out after...

    Box blade width?

At this point I'm going to try and level my mother's yard with it. Mainly filling low spots and perhaps working on the grade if it seems necessary. Other than that I have no use for it currently.

1952 8N Ford tractor. changing tranny/hydrolic oil, how to clean it before adding new oil..

Don't forget to drain the trans while you're at it, I made that mistake the first time and ended up contaminating 50$ worth of new oil, they share the same fluid.

1952 8N Ford tractor. changing tranny/hydrolic oil, how to clean it before adding new oil..

Pull the PTO shaft, and removed the hydraulic pump from the bottom. It's attached to the bottom pan, you have to let it drop then pull it out at an angle, it takes some figuring out, but it's not hard, just heavy. Once you've dropped the pump and got the PTO shaft out you'll be able to clean the...

    Box blade width?

Also thanks for that advice, I'll check that out once we get past our monsoon season this year. Would you think on the case of it not sitting flat on the ground that a hydraulic top link would be of any help with that?

    Box blade width?

I understand how to use Google, most results take me here for tractor questions. The majority of the posts said the same thing, blade as wide or wider than the back tires. But in my case I've already purchased a box blade, before I knew this suggestion, and like I said when I picked up my mower...

    Box blade width?

I got a good deal on a box blade and chain harrow when I purchased my used shredder, or so I thought. I was paying 675$ for a used 5ft shredder, but the guy had a 48 inch rhino box blade and a heavy duty chain harrow next to them, so I offered him 1000$ for all three. I figured 325$ for a blade...

    Old ford and past projects

Thank you. I'm lucky to have several soil types on property, the poorest is the picture where the potatoes were planted, it's a nasty yellow rocky clay. Two years rotating a flock of 50 ducks over woodchips there has turned it to great soil now.

    Old ford and past projects

Each spring I watched the winter grasses bounce back faster than my neighbors, and grow far taller and more lush. It's something of beauty, and I thoroughly enjoy watching the process from year to year.
  43. Greenvalleymatt

    Old ford and past projects

Established a beneficial relationship with a tree service that had as many wood chips as I wanted. I accepted them all. Overtime I've spread over 4 acres. No nitrogen added, but I do broadcast cover crops from time to time, mostly legumes.

    Old ford and past projects

Started with the first small garden, which was simply me finding partially composted horse manure and shavings, the garden that year was infertile, the weeds and grass won the battle, but I was determined. The pasture was in poor condition due to my great grandfather abusing it decades before.

    Old ford and past projects

Wanted to share some of the things I've been working on for years. Spreading woodchips, making compost, improving and building soil. It's been fun. I sold the old ford last week since I upgraded to a modern tractor. Soil here was hard compact clay with very little to no organic matter. Not so...

    Grading a lawn area...

I have observed and will continue through the next week the patterns of the flow on site. Good to know the blade will do most of it. I do have around 3 yards of soil and 3 to 4 yards of sand to add when necessary. I have installed a swale in the pasture to divert water, I used a mini skid steer...

    Land is cleared... now what?

Gotta do what you want with it. If you're looking for a nice lush pasture, I'd have it turned, find what grass does well in your area and when the correct planting time is for that particular seed, and plant and cultipack. Just depends on the crop you want. You could always have it turned over...

    Grading a lawn area...

Hello all, looking to fix my mother's yard that's been a mess of a swamp since her house was built. The builder didn't grade the 1 acre lot before building, and my mother didn't know there would be any issues cause it looked fairly flat. All these years later we've found many low spots in the...

    Bush hog setup

When I installed it that way I was having a hard time keeping the back wheel off the ground for transport, that's why I assumed it needed to be fixed. Hey y'all, I'm running into an issue setting up my new to me John Deere 513 bush hog. Paid 675$ for it, get it home to fin banged up dull blades, gearbox dry, and the top link bars not fixed to the supports. Added some 00 grease, ground and sharpened blades, but the problem I'm having is...

    Questions about chain harrow capabilities.

That's mainly what I was hoping to use it for, to cover seeds once broadcasted. The guy I bought it from says it's does amazing at leveling his gravel driveway, which we plan on building one soon, about 300 yards long, so if it does only that well it will be worth the 100$ I spent on it.

New tractor, first few upgrades installed!

First is low beams, then high, then light bar. I reckon I'll run with both high and the bar on.
  60. Greenvalleymatt

New tractor, first few upgrades installed!

I'll take pictures when it gets dark of then headlights vs the light bar, it's a huge difference! Most people mount them on the rops, but this tractor has the rops right close to the top of my head, and I know bugs are attracted to light, so I'm not trying to draw them all to my face.

New tractor, first few upgrades installed!

My 2021 mahindra 1626 was delivered last Friday, I love it! Have used the loader a few times so far, but it's to wet to do any dirt work. So far I've installed a steering wheel spinner knob, and a 126 watt light bar to use for night mowing in our hot Texas summer heat. What other basic upgrades...

    Questions about chain harrow capabilities.

Yea I'm still in the market for what's available used for good prices, as far as attachments go. And I learned my lesson the hard way years ago, never think you'll be rid of Bermuda or Johnson grass, just do your best, and keep on fighting it 😵

    Mahindra 1626

Just had my 1626 delivered last Friday! Got the 5ft tiller with it, purchased a 5ft Deere bush hog, 4ft box blade (Rhino), and heavy duty chain harrow used for 1000$ locally. I'm ready to get to work once all this rain lets up here in north Texas!
  65. Greenvalleymatt

    Questions about chain harrow capabilities.

I don't care about the grass, I'm not currently grazing or planning anytime soon, I'd rather have cover crops than grass in this situation. But Bermuda and Johnson grass don't go easily, and spraying to kill is not something I'm interested in either.
  66. Greenvalleymatt

    Questions about chain harrow capabilities.

Ok, I was hoping with heavy chain harrow it would scrape the surface enough to just get seed to soil contact. I also have a two bottom plow and an old disc, but I didn't have any luck with it on the old ford because the hydraulics were a mess, even after rebuilding the pump and replacing seals...

    Questions about chain harrow capabilities.

Long story short....I've been "farming" for a few years, basically trying to reinvent the wheel with a 49 ford 8n and some old worn out equipment, fast forward to today and I upgraded to a mahindra 1626 tractor with a 5ft tiller, I've also purchased a heavy duty used chain harrow. My goal with...
