Ah, but then it wouldn't match her Big RED Beast!

Brandi, real nice job, and good save!

Hugs to you

Fred

Fred.:) Thanks! Exactly on the RED. If it had been blue, it might have stayed that color.:D My first tractor was a Ford 3055.

At least it isn't green any longer!:laughing::laughing:

Nothing beats a piece of equipment that you save by rebuilding and repainting. I do it all the time and never lost a dime on my efforts. Everyone always wants to buy the projects after I'm done and are willing to pay up for it. New decals are a real plus if you can find them,

Sixdogs,
That has been in the back of my mind too. There is a large metal tag on top stating......... Amco Manufacturing Yazoo City Mississippi............on top, in raised letters. It is riveted on and I didn't want to remove it, because I thought I might ruin it. I want to try to clean off the letters, but it is real thin. Maybe go back and use sandpaper on a flat board and just sand the letter tops, then paint by hand and artist's brush in black.

The Amco Rep. told me there might not be many parts in stock anymore for this disc. So I would think no decals. I could maybe get new style Amco decals for it. That is a thought! Thanks!

And as a side benefit, Brandi always wanted a red concrete floor in her shop. Super nice job of painting and restoration. It is going to be and impressive disc when you get it behind the tractor.
Question: it looks like each blade has a backer plate of some sort on it that fits tightly to each blade. I don't think I have ever seen that but it should be nearly impossible to break a blade on that beast.
Gary,
Thanks! Your right on the backers. These disc (pans?) are plenty thick.:D Thickest I have ever seen. Think railroad wheel. While moving the gangs around back into place, I did see where one had a nick and was filed down every so slightly.;) Reminded me how I used to file the trailing edge of props on piston aircraft.

Brandi-I have not had luck with sandpaper on machine plates I just mask when I paint and leave them the way they are or just wipe with solvent.
Decals don't have to be the exact ones the machine came with unless unusual in some regard. Close works for decals. On parts availability, no problem. The only thing that can go bad are the bearings and you can buy those. Anything else can be made but you aren't ever going to break that beast.

There are a lot of those offset discs around here and they are very aggressive in cutting and highly respected for what they can do.

Sixdogs,
That name plate is like real thin tin. The letters are raised, so I might try to sand the new and old paint off of the letters...........at least rough up to high lite the letters enough to see and paint black.

Well, humid weather is here again. Glad I have this high volume fan.
4-1-13 Fan Tabletop.jpg
I took the night off to run into Houston and pick up 4 aircraft tires and wheels Monday. Gensco Aircraft Tires have tires on wheels ready to go. 9 x 15 16 ply tires, wheels, and sealant..........$118 each. I also picked up 4 gang bolts that I mis ordered.

The tongue and all it's monkey motion is installed and ready to roll.

The gangs are all on.

I painted the lift cylinder Black, to add some color contrast on top. I had to touch up the paint after I removed it from hanging from my loader. So it will go on ASAP.

I hope Fred (GreenWannabe) is not feeling to left out, as I still have some green paint on a gang bearing mount.

I am not finished with this project by no means. I still need to make some new disc scrapers out of 2 inch wide 3/8 inch thick strap, and fab. scrapers to weld on them, then have a machine shop cut out square slots so it can slide on the carriage bolts. I'm missing over half of the scrapers. With 12 disc pans on front and 12 on back, 22 scrapers are used. I have 9 on hand and only 1 of those is good to go. All the rest need new scraper plates welded on. Amco wants around $90 each for new disc scrapers!

Right now, it is ready to take to the welding shop to fix 2 maybe three cracks I found while painting.

I got the cylinder installed just now. I have it on with quick pins so I can remove it easily if needed.

Oh, I'm not feeling left out at all. While my lawn tractor might be GREEN, my tractor is ORANGE. Color doesn't matter much to me, I think most any tractor is pretty good! Maybe excepting the "VietNam rebuilds" and some of the Chinese.

Nice work Brandi. I will suggest that you protect the valve stems on those tires. Large clumps of dirt coming off the disk gang like to rip off valve stems. Btdt

Tomorrow I will be going to look at used aircraft tires and wheels to buy. I will be going with wider wheels and tires to get more height in the tires.

That would be great using aircraft tires. Heavy duty and tuff. Hate to think of how many worn a/c tires i leaned against that were being used for the jetways....:D Nice paint job. I was midnite painter for 2 yrs in PIT. Then bid
Ld. Mech and got it for 3 yrs til I retired...

The tires she has on there would probably run without air. You would not believe how thick those sidewalls are and stiff...

Gotta go back to work tonight. I got up early this afternoon and pulled the disc outside. I wanted to see if it would hitch on front of the tractor. It does and that allows me to hook up hydraulics from my grapple diverter valve. This allows me to move the disc around while the BH is installed.

I am going to buy a longer pin for hitching in front. Long enough to go through both upper and lower bracket on my tractor's hitch up front. With a longer pin, do Y'all think the front hitch mount is strong enough to push the disc up my dual tandem trailer ramps and dovetail to load? I mean, it is way easier to load connected this way. This way it moves like an aircraft being pushed with a tug.4-2-13 Disc Tractor Front Detail.jpg Oh yeah.......I noticed the other day my grill bottom, seen in the photo, has a huge dent in it. Must have happened running the grapple and a stray limb attacked it.

Thanks BR,
I realized while painting the wheels that the stems are rubber. At least they should be steel. I'll either have to live with it, or take it somewhere they can remove the tire. I don't think tire shops want to put thick beaded aircraft tires on their mount machines. But I could ask. I would have to wait where I bought the tires, an hour after work for them to open, to have them do it.

I had one 3 inch pipe nipple welded to the rear rim of my old Ford 3055 (photo above) when I had a flat. Never got the chance to install the other rear valve stem nipple!

Thanks Tom. Where you with US Airways? I had a layover in PIT once. It was winter and raining. Real dreary looking. I'm more familiar with Phlliy's airport. While working TDY in ACY, (we were there flying casino junkets ) us mechanics made numerous trips to Philly to pick up parts shipments..........and replacement mechanics!

I think this true. Especially with the duals. Funny thing..........the sidewalls do not have any max psi printed in them. They do say...............Not for flight. These are recaps.
