Goose neck vs bumper pull

Locally our "AG use" rules are very liberal. Very common to see 3/4T or 1T pickups pulling GN hay trailers with large bales stacked 2 wide (overwidth) with no license on the trailer and often no lights. When you come up behind one of them you can't even see what's pulling it. When they want to turn left they slow and move to the center of the road so no one can pass. Here you can actually drive an ATV or UTV down the road with no special markings or flags as long as you can prove you are AG related. I drive my Yamaha Rhino back and forth to our farm (6 miles) on State Hiways with not so much as a second glance from Law Enforcement.

No Brandi it was an older, smaller Bobcat. He might have been pulling more weight than me, but it would have been very little and I doubt it. The buggies I was hauling weigh 4600-4700 lbs a piece. And I'm not picking on the Duramax. I would have told the story regardless of the outcome. It was just the one and only time since owning my Diesel I've been involved in what I would consider a "real world" challenge. All three of us drivers enjoyed the test.

Thanks, my truck wont notice the 10k trailer either way, F350 dually, I like the fiver/goose neck stability but unless I upgrade my license to an AR which requires a yearly medical (was $100 ten years ago)I would be hard pressed to legally move my tractor and some toys with a gooseneck. I want the 20', it looks like a bumper pull for me. To bad the ministry can't be talk to when you are pulled over, lol.

You may still be in a pickle because your truck is a dually. The rule for HOS ( hours of service logs ) is that you are exempt 'if' the truck has a GVWR of 6000 Kg or less 'and' is being used for personal uses. You are also exempt for farming purposes.... So, if for example you are moving your machine in order to cut someones field you could get fined if they determine you are doing it for some compensation. Most modern 350's are either just below or slightly above that 6000 Kg number.

The 10,000 lb trailer rule applies to everyone though, except for RV's ( perversely ) You would need a Restricted Class A to pull it.

Thanks, I have learned a few things and one thing stays the same dealers will tell you what you want to hear lol

14000# GVWR PACKAGE on my truck puts me up there for sure lol

I bought a truck so that I wouldn't have to worry about pulling my fiver now it looks like the funny hat guys can cause me troubles, go figure lol.

one things for sure the G men have there hands in our pockets ;)

Do you have farm tags on the truck?

No not a famer just wannabe who has a larger recreational property, should say large for a city boy, lol, 35.5 acres

Me thinks with all the times I will be using an equipment float I will go the rental route. Pretty much me going the nine kms to my cousins. The local guy (40 km away) will rent one for $60 a day, only 16' but hey I wont have to pay for the sticker each year. I figure I would only be using it a couple times a year at best. Seems more then it is worth to own it.

The Government up here is stifling people buying and doing stuff and I am at the stage in my life that it isn't worth the energy to fight it.

Yes the load requirement is lifted when hauling husbandry equipment, so if hauling hay or a tractor with a hay rake I would be ok, ;)
What about just a tractor? Could you get by it hauling a mini excavator?

I will throw in my two cents worth probably all it's worth having a twenty foot GN built as we speak or type had a hitch installed in my Toyota which has 5 and a half foot bed. 3400 dollars for trailer built to my specs. seems like a good price but watching videos on youtube is there much concern about trailer hitting top of bed when going thru a dip in road and how do you compensate for this. be willing to listen or read all advice thanks.

Can't see how this would happen, as the ball is locked to the hitch. However the guys that actually use a goose should pitch in here. By the way the trailers I looked at couldn't touch your price so I think you did get a great price.

Rocky, valid concern!!!! I pull my GN into some pretty unlevel and uneven spots. When turning and going thru a dip or over a hump you can tap the top of your bedside easily. When I'm in that position I'm looking out the back window of my extended cab, watching for this problem. Sometimes I've had to back up and take a different line. In areas where most trailer pulling happens, it's rarely an issue.

The problem is the "arch" of the gooseneck tongue hitting the side of the bed (or the tailgate) when the truck is at a different angle than the trailer...

Short wheel base trucks have the problem of a horse trailer forward corner hitting the cab turning sharp when backing up. I was taught very young to buy long wheel base trucks. After all, your buying a truck to haul stuff my Dad would say.

If your worried about a GN hitch hitting your truck bed, you can extend the adjustable coupler. My old GN lowboy had a lockbolt and just a pin and clip to extend or retract the coupler up into the GN hitch. The coupler on my Top Hat dual tandem GN has a lock bolt and a jackscrew crank to adjust GN height above the truck bed or to level your deck better. I like my coupler adjusted high enough so I can walk behind the truck with out ducking while the GN is hitched up.

The only problems that I have had with the trailer hitting top of bed is with gooseneck horse trailers, but they have less clearance than a gooseneck equipment trailer.

I adjust the hitch to get at least 6" from the top of the tailgate to the trailer.

Note that there is more than 6" clearance with my deckover gooseneck.

Although adjusting the height of the hitch on the trailer will help some, you have to be more concerned with your trailer pulling flat when loaded. The axle oscillation on GN trailers is very limited. This is done to lower the deck all they can when building them. If you raise the hitch point too far your axles will be oscillated to the maximum or near that. Then when your axles cross unlevel terrain the oscillators will "bottom" out. Not good. When adjusting hitch height you need to be more concerned about where the oscillators are in their arc than how much bed clearance you have. Driver attention will overcome bed hitting problems.
