geoduck - I appreciate the offer, even if in jest. However, if I GAVE you the vehicle - I want to remain a friend and would always be concerned about your return, And I've very sure your return would not be under the best of terms. Let us remain friends - I will sell it to somebody who will know exactly what they are getting.

Yes, it was in jest. I thought you were giving it to your son, no?

Honestly, at this point, I don't know. It's a good pickup but it has a "check engine" light on the dash. I've had Napa run a free diagnosis. Something to do with the fuel management system. He already has his own debts and doesn't need another problem. I will probably just sell - as is - give him the money. That way, neither of us has the problems.

I found that the tire pressure monitoring system is gov mandated on the PW. Got the same on my motorcycle. Worthless - if you don't keep track of tire pressure, you probably don't monitor your engine oil either. A lot of folks are going to do a whole lot better in driverless autos. The driverless auto will do fine as long as there is a place to plug in their cell phones or other electronic devices.

Not sure why monitors are gov mandated. I thought the manufacturer had to mandate them because of their corroding aluminum wheels. Sometimes it could be a week, other times a month but you can count on those bad boys corroding and leaking air around the bead of the tire. However, manufacturers are saying there is nothing wrong with the rim.

Didn't the previous president make a big deal about gas mileage being affected by over/under inflation of tires? Wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that to be the reason. The govt seems to want to make it all efficient at any cost.

I believe that mandate came out of the Firestone/exploding Explorer fiasco. Who'd a thunk that you need to check your tire pressure occasionally?

Or is that there could be any kind of problem with the vehicle manufacturer setting the tire pressure to be too low for the weight put on them based on the tire manufacturers recommendations (so they didn't have to spend an extra $10 per vehicle on suspension)...

I just read up on it and realized my error. That is what lead to the TMS requirement, however. It does appear in addition that there were problems from tires coming from one plant during certain shifts. I don't know if they were letting quality control slide to keep the numbers up, or what lead to the problem.

Ford had under inflation numbers to soften the ride, Firestone got the blame!

Lots of folks bought those same tires, inflated them "properly" and never had a problem with them.

The PW comes with Wranglers. Made a deal with the Les Schwab dealer. I'll call him when the truck gets here. He will swap out the Wranglers for Toyo Open Country MT 8 ply. I'll pay the difference. Always had Toyo tires. Great tires.

My 2006 Jeep TJ has aluminum wheels. Twelve years - not a moments problems with the wheels. However, the Jeep SELDOM travels the city streets or freeways. That's where the de-icing products are used.

And yet, even with the tire monitoring systems with their dash lights and all, people still drive around with half inflated tires. Like they say, you can't fix stupid.

Lots of Aluminum Wheels here and never seen a corroded one and I have family in the business...

Maybe it is snow/salt exposure?

Winter in the Bay Area is when it rains.

Same here. I've had and still have vehicles with the aluminum wheels and NONE have had any corrosion. The ones on my Wrangler look a bit rough but that's because of the rocks/mud/gravel they live in. Never had a problem with one, though.

Couldn't agree more! I've got the Toyos on both my dually and my 4x4 van because they are the best tires I've found as far as resisting rock breaks on the dirt roads I have to drive. As soon as the current tires on my Wrangler wear out the Toyo MTs are going on it also. Also, Les Schwab is such a great outfit to deal with.
Not sure though that you'll be able to find the tires in the size you need for the Power Wagon in load range D. I believe they are all load range E.

We had 2 cars, a PT Cruiser and a 300 that the aluminum wheels literally rotted off the vehicle. They seemed worse than the GM and Ford vehicles we owned at the same time.

I wonder if some galvanic or electrolysis action with dissimilar metals could be part of the problem?

That definitely comes into play between the aluminum wheel and steel hub.

I think maybe that and moisture somehow working together causes some of these problems. Could also be some static electricity in play too. I haven't seen "static discharge straps" on vehicles in decades.

Forgot all about those! Used to love seeing the sparks flying off them at night as the straps touched the road surface.
