Toyota Tundra to get Cummins 5.0L V8 Diesel too

This is great for Indiana, home of Cummins. It's great for the imports also. They will now be taken seriously. Not that they shouldn't have to date. In my eyes the F150, Tundra, Titan, Ram, and GM trucks are how they stack up currently.

This is very bad news for the domestics and their diesel plans. Especially Ram.

Time to start saving my money. As long as the capabilities are there (payload and towing), I'll get one. I had a 2011 Tundra Crewmax with the 5.7 and loved it, but a diesel will be even better. I am curious about the v8 Cummins part. To me, a Cummins is an I6 with that distinctive sound (like my 03 Ram with the 5.9).

I have a 09 tundra with the 5.7 its the best truck I've ever owned. I drove Dodges for a long time and got good service from them and then bought a GMC. I think I just got a bad one, that GMC had something little breaking all the time. Nickel and dimed me to death. The tundra has been rock solid since day one. Likes the gas station though!

DiamondPilot,

I am in full agreement except for one thing - Ram is no longer "Domestic" - otherwise they would have had the Cummins Light Duty first. Guess how I know that? (no hints :scratchchin:)

Ram is turning into a Fiat. Sorry, euro econoboxes for Roman cart paths aren't what the USA is about, guys! First Daimler wrecks Chrylser, then Fiat.

And here I own a Ram, as they were the best truck in the 2000's (for me, anyway). And now Fiat goes and sinks 'em. Perfect.

nirion,

those of us in industry also know Cummins by many V block engines they made, starting with some oldies. The V903 comes to mind, believe it is in the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Then all the V engines in mine haul trucks, power generators, etc. Cummins has made V engines for many decades - the general public doesn't know that.

Thanks. I had heard of some they may way back, but wasn't aware of the newer stuff. I have faith that they will make a good engine, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it goes.

Edit - filled up my Ram with $4.19/diesel. Gas is $3.29, maybe that new Cummins doesn't sound as much fun....

The only thing I will say is this has been said by Toyota before, and to announce it for 2016? I wouldn't hold my breath. That Cummins engine would tear my 2006 Tundra apart at the seams. Not sure how much heavier duty the newer ones are. No experience with them.

Just replaced the company Nissan Titan with a crew cab off road Tundra. Really nice vehicle that likes it's gas. This will be interesting.

Yet another that has my attention. For the time being my 08 Duramax will have to do. I had considered Toyota at one time, but seeing the Tundras around make me think they look light and very chinsey or cheap! Just my opinion, and I am not one that likes any bling on a truck so I don't know what makes them appear that way to me.

I would always wait for a vehicle to be out a few years before I bought one anyway.

That Cummins would be great in a 3/4 ton truck. Personally, that's just too much for a 1/2 ton. I think the 3.0L that Ram has is about the sweet spot in 1/2 ton diesel size.

You probably didn't like 454's in Chevelle's or 428's in mustangs either? ;)

No such thing as too much power.

And the V6's of today will put those gas guzzlers in their place!

I will have to second that fordmantpw! Toyota will be broken in half with that size engine and the torque it puts out.Im not a fan of Toyota or Nissan , they look cheap to me. I wouldn't want one CUMMINS or not. I will stick with Ford, Gm, Dodge . Ive owned all 3 in the past , I no before anybody says anything they have foreign parts etc.... I will still stay with them regardless.

I'd be interested in one for sure. I'd love to see a Cummins or a d-4d make its way into a Tacoma eventually too.

I have owned Toyota trucks and cars for 25 years and have 100% confidence they will roll out a beautiful and beefy truck that will blow the socks off the competition. They make a really dependable product. I don't like buying foreign owned company products either but more than that, I want a dependable truck that won't drive me to drink. Count me as a buyer for the Tundra diesel.

I agree completely. It's a half ton, the diesel is being put in mostly for fuel mileage and still be a great pulling motor. No need to go big displacement for a half ton diesel. It defeats the purpose. I think ram got it right.
