JD4100 John Deere
Tough Little Tractor
Model Year: 2000

It mows four acres of rough ground and steep areas and it does it while pulling a swisher that trashed the two previous riding mowers. The only problem so far was voltage regulator. The dealer managed to add this and that, and next thing I know the bill was $500 plus. It runs a posthole digger and a 5-foot box blade well. It is a heavy duty little rig.

Pros: Does not take up much room in garage for the amount of work you can get done
Cons: Can't haul a round bail with loade

Response To A Review By Henry
Model Year: 0

I know exactly what the hard starting problem is. I am a retired John Deere master technician. These tractors have the neutral safety switch under the floor if hydrostatic drive activated by f-r pedals. there is no adjustment. If it won't start kick the pedals, I bet it will go.

Pros: Excellent buy
Cons: None

Hard to start
Model Year: 1999

Tractor was very difficult to start. Checked glow plugs and all of them open. Replaced all the glow plugs. Tractor starts easy at 0 degrees with 2- 3 second hits on the glow plugs. Toughest piece of iron that I have ever owned.

Pros: Will do jobs that actually too big for it. Strong Hydraulics
Cons: Little under powered

4200
Model Year: 0

I did not see 4200 compact tractor but 4100 anyway this tractor has been unreliable. It will not start for no apparent reason and then start. I have sent it to dealer numerous times and they charge me big $. It comes back and soon same problems. It is made of plastic and the front grill area came off in tall weeds. A limb fell and cracked the top. It is an expensive tractor to maintain and repair.

Pros: Does a lot of work when it starts.
Cons: Problems starting.

4100 John Deere Compact Utility with Belly Mower and Front Loader
Model Year: 2000

A very nice tractor for yard work. It is very fuel efficient yet plenty of power to run loader, blade work or mowing. I would buy another one but I have no reason to replace it. I just put my first battery in it 2 years ago! I am very happy with this tractor.

Pros: Very easy to use heavy duty compact tractor.
Cons: None.

JD4100 John Deere
Excellent Utility Tractor
Model Year: 1999

I bought this tractor to clean up my parent's property after my father died. I have since found many uses for it around my own place and my son and son in law have borrowed it many times. I have the front end loader and the mid-mount mower accessories. The loader is the most useful item. The tractor get as much use in the winter as it does in the summer doing snow removal for me and a couple of my neighbors. I also keep the street in front of my house clear and as wide as it is in the summer. This is a great machine.

Pros: Very useful utility machine.
Cons: None.

JD4100 John Deere
Tractor
Model Year: 0

I had this tractor for just over 11 years and this is the tractor I would buy all over again. Easy to maneuver in small area and pretty powerful for a 19 hp hds with front end loader. I would like to add a backhoe but not sure if it would be to heavy. If somebody have one I would like to hear from you.

Pros: All good.
Cons: None.

JD4100 John Deere
Repair Experience
Model Year: 2004

I got this used tractor for mowing, driveway maintenance. It's barn stored. I had to replace a three point turnbuckle and it was $65---ridiculously expensive for this small part. After a year of light mowing and barn cleaning it wouldn't start. After running through the usual causes (fuel and filters, battery, bled fuel lines & checked pumps), I called the JD Dealer. There was a two week wait. On the pick up day no one showed. I called again to find out the dealer had come to my area but forgot (?) to pick up my tractor. I borrowed a trailer and hauled it to another dealer (Kubota). After 11 hours the mechanic couldn't track down the intermittent ground short. He had replaced the fuel system solenoid $260 that had failed. Total shop time 11 hours. Electrical short on the ground side and he finally just ran a jumper from the solenoid to ground. The lights all work again now too. The shop charged 3.5 hrs labor (wrote off 7 hours as "educational") so I got out of this for $550. Never found the short but I didn't want a $300 wiring harness plus labor. Definitely not going to work in the rain and get the tractor wet any longer.

Pros: Handy hobby tractor for keeping up after 4 horses.
Cons: Extravagant cost of repair parts, unknown problem with dealer.

Lil' Mule
Model Year: 1998

Over all the 4100 HYD is a awesome lil' tractor. Several features can be added to it and thinking of getting a second one.

Pros: HYD, 4wd, 3cyl Yanmar, adaptable to many implements.
Cons: Side warning lights should have been enclosed in a metal frame to prevent damage and the ability to run the hidden hydraulics have been added from the factory.

JD4100 John Deere
Good Tractor
Model Year: 1999

Tractor was purchased usde with 125 hours. It has been used exclusively for mowing. Tractor performed flawlessly for the first 4 years, but in the last 2 years the glow plug, starter relay, and head gasket had to be replaced. Hopefully it will now run for several seasons. The land pride 5 foot finishing mower purchased with the tractor has performed without problems.

Pros: Operating ease.
Cons: Reliability.

John Deere 4100
Model Year: 1992

I bought this tractor to clear some acreage on my parent's property. It came with a 410 loader and a 60" mid mount mower. The tractor did a great job on clearing the property. I now use it to maintain my property and for snow removal. It is a great running, capable tractor. I have no problems at all with it and it is able to do whatever I want it to do. As long as you remember that this is not a heavy duty industrial machine, you are all set. I added LED worklights to the machine for plowing and this has been a great plus. My son and son-in-law borrow the machine regularly for projects as well.

Pros: Good, dependable machine.
Cons: None.

JD4100 John Deere
John Deere 4100
Model Year: 2000

As far as reliability issues, I think the John Deere 4100 is very reliable. The only issues that I have had are: 1. A sealed bearing on the reverse hydrostatic foot pedal crumbled. It was very easy to get to and replace. 2. The pins that attach to the hydraulic cylinders on the wobble stick for the front end loader seized up and would not pivot independently. This caused the plate to become worn out. Now that I have replaced it the first time, if it happens again it will be an easy fix.

Pros: Yanmar motor, strong hydraulics.
Cons: Costly replacement parts.
