If I ever go full prepper, I'm investing in lead rather than gold or silver like everybody else. Lead can feed my family & if it comes to it take your gold.

In all reality I'm much more worried about a week long power outage here in Colorado when the tempature is in the teens. We have propane heat, but still need electricity to power the furnace fans. I'm an Eagle Scout & the Boy Scout motto is "Be Prepared". I've already got the tractor & the PTO generator. Just need to make sure I have the fuel on hand to run it if need be while we are snowed in or what not.

Diversity and patience are important to successful investing.

There are lead mining stocks out there, and small ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) focused on base metals but individual stocks are MUCH RISKIER than Vanguard's (or T. Rowe Price's) RELATIVELY diversified Precious Metals and Mining Fund. Plus the maintenance of individual stock records for the Internal Revenue Service over long periods is tedious. Mutual Funds do the record keeping for you.

At this time energy mutual funds are probably in a short term BUY LOW range. Vanguard has a dedicated energy fund. T. Rowe Price has a broader natural resource fund called the New Era fund, which includes energy but also mining and metal stocks.

The investment objective of NEW ERA is to provide long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in the common stocks of companies that own or develop natural resources and other basic commodities and in the stocks of selected nonresource growth companies.

As of 06/30/2015 the New Era Fund had a total of 126 holdings.
Sector Diversification

% of Total Net Assets
Exploration & Production 29.7%
Chemicals 11.6%
Energy Services & Processors 10.8%
Integrateds 10.5%
Energy Industrials 10.2%
Metals & Mining 10.2%
Utilities 7.9%
Agriculture 4.6%
Other 3.2%

Hopefully you can fabricate a propellant with easily obtainable natural chemicals?

If things got really bad - why would you even care if there was fuel for your tractor. What do you plan on doing - running around on your tractor thru an apocalypse scenario. Would you be the only person within a 200 mile radius with fuel to use in their tractor - for exactly what purpose.

This is an interesting but somewhat confused situation.

Dude, he meant BULLETS, AMMUNITION !!!

So, are you just moonlighting as a a stock pimp? Bored in retirement there in Florida???

Anyway, to the poster. If you got a good deal on the tank then go for it. That is the only thing stopping me from doing it. The nearest fuel station is 32 miles from me, one way, and I got a lot of tanks at the house...diesel and gas. Fuel runs have to be planned, spending 1/4 tank of fuel and 1:20 hours to buy fuel is not fun. Many of the houses in the community have one or two farm tanks, not to mention every farm/ranch there as well. In fact the local company will deliver for free if you buy enough.

How does one go about getting a 500-gallon tank filled? Do you schedule a visit from Chevron?

Is fuel cheaper that way than buying at the pump?

Whoever local wholesale / bulk dealers in your area are. These are the same places that sell to gas stations, you buy direct. They deliver bulk fuel to farms, mines, timber cutting operations, construction sites, all kind of folks buy it in bulk and have delivered. Mostly business to business but if you have a tank and pay your bills they are happy to sell you too.
