Log Splitters

I have no problem splitting a 24 inch Douglas Fir round on my 5 ton electric splitter. Usually the wedge goes in a couple of inches, then it pops apart. Very easy splitting wood. I use the loader bucket for a log lift. About a cord or two a year is all I need.

There's no question the wedge on the beam is better, and even better is a hydraulically adjustable wedge on beam with side wings for a 4 way split.

But unless you have a log lift, you aren't going to split big stuff that way, and a lot of what I get is 30-40" oak. That's not getting lifted onto the splitter! I can wrestle that onto the splitting foot and get it done. Otherwise, I'd have to forego a lot of free wood. It's all about what your needs are, which includes what you are going to be splitting.

On that note, this cracks me up:

Compare that to a 40" oak crotch! :D

But on a serious note, again, it's all about what you are going to be splitting. If 24" fir is big to you, then a 22 is probably good and a 27 will do just fine. I'd be crying with one of those smaller ones.

Know your wood and buy accordingly.

Yeah. For my operation I have to either split or wedge//sledge everythng down to a size I can load on the truck. 24" round ain't all that big but I would be halfing it for loading. .

I got this one simply because of the Honda engine. It's been great.

Shop Troy-Bilt 27-Ton Gas Log Splitter at Lowes.com

I bought the same one last year...so far no issues. I liked the Honda engine, and the position of the wheels and controls seemed more ergonomic to me. I spent a day comparing a few in this price range and settled on it. Lowes had one left and had been sitting for a while...I talked the manager into selling it to me for $999.00 to get it off his inventory. I remember one that I had looked at had an edge that wrapped the beam....just seemed like an area for debris to build up in.

Good Evening Grumpy Joe,
I have a Speedco 27 ton that I bought used from Home Depot a few years ago. It only had about 90 rental hours on it so less actual run time. It has not given me any real trouble to date !

A friend of mine works in the rental department at the local HD, gave me a call and I bought it for $700.

I thought that was a pretty good deal, so what I'm saying is try talking to some of the staff at your local box store and ask if they do anything like sell to the public at a certain point in the life of these machines ! I'm sure I saved $1000 or more, and the splitter still works great !

BTW it has a Honda 8 HP engine.

It also seems the the length of the log has a lot to of with the power you need. I mostly cut everything around 12-14" so it is easy to handle and if I am not home my wife and kids can easily get wood and throw it in the stove. With the shot lengths I never run out of power on my small 27 ton but I don't split anything special just oak, maple, elm normally. Nothing much over 24" -26" across normally. Even then I flip the splitter up so I don't have to pick it up, I can just roll it in place and split away. Lately I been hand splitting a bunch (12" stuff) figure it is good exercise!

Speedo and Oregon are both Blount brands. I know Blount was sold recently but does anyone know which of the two brands had the better splitters? I see the GX Honda engines on the Oregon. Is it better?

I bought the 28 ton Oregon, other than the Honda I don't see any real difference except paint. I bought the table to attach, what a pita it was to mount correctly. But love it now.

Did you buy it on line or through a dealer?

Splitting Firewood Using Wedge & Sledgehammer - YouTube

I grew up with a sledge in my hand from the time I was around 8 as did every one I went to school with. No, I do not remember ANYONE splitting with a sledge in such a stupid fashion. One uses a sledge with a full length handle and really swings, notd just tap, tap, tap. The stuff he is splitting would just fall apart with a fiskars.

I do around 12-14 cord a year (use 6, sell the rest) and still do 90% of the splitting by hand, wedge/sledge/fiskars/maul. I have the Troybilt splitter but it only sees the knots/crotches/twisties.
