A smallish torch similar to weed burner for starting a chimney of wood, charcoal or briquettes is the best of both worlds.^ I agree, except I do use a propane grill for some foods depending on the occasion.
The best way to grill is with hardwood, then a close second is chunk charcoal. The briquettes leave a kerosene note to the food and using lighter fluid to start the fire is absolutely horrid! You can taste the lighter fluid in the food even after the fluid has supposedly burned off.
My brother cooked out at least 3-4 times per week and was picky about type charcoal and starter used. Refused to use self starting due to lingering fuel smell and taste. After hearing dad complain about price of or running out of lighter fluid,14 y o son bagged up empty lighter bottles and refilled them from a neighbor's diesel tank. Brother was livid over the sorry fluid ruining steaks so he cooked over wood for a week or two util boy told him about the intended good deed. My brother passed before his kids bought places of their own but he swore when they did he would mess with their lights, gates, water hydrants and anything else that might disturb them.
