As of late the term AR has been applied to just about every black rifle and some not black rifles as well.

That must have been some trick. The AR15 is not a military rifle. Of course they were in short supply.

In Vietnam, the US Army used M1, M14 and M16 rifles for the most part. Contrary to popular myth, the M16 was not an AR.
There's often been confusion regarding AR15 versus M16.

The M16 I carried in Vietnam was semi automatic, one squeeze = one round, or full auto, one squeeze and hold emptied the magazine. If you were quick you could fire only two or three rounds per squeeze. But you had to be good. Statistically it would empty a 20 round mag in three seconds or less. Can't remember the exact time.

They actually started transitioning the m16 to 3 round bursts during the tailend of Nam. After Nam they fazed out the fully auto version completely. On later versions of the M16 the selector switch transitioned between semi auto and 3 round bursts to conserve ammo and improve accuracy.

Not sure, but i believe one of the reasons full auto wasn't as useful after the Vietnam war. I'm sure someone here could tell us why being able to have most everyone shoot full auto into a blind jungle ambush would be beneficial.

Wastes ammo.

Here's a quick screen shot of the reasoning behind switching to 3 round bursts.

I'd think that would not be a reason to have full auto. I'm assuming full auto would use more ammunition.
Yeh man, I was supporting your point. One thing I've heard, it was especially newer guys handling the rifle, target acquisition was them trailing rounds between targets, wasting ammo. Burst mode allowed for proper target acquisition, with 3 rounds deemed ideal amount to put em down.

Exactly. The M16A1 was most definitely a fully automatic (AR) rifle.

30 round mags jammed a lot. So GIs learned to tape two 20 round mags together. With a simple flip you had 40 rounds. 😎
