Not sure, but i believe one of the reasons full auto wasn't as useful after the Vietnam war. I'm sure someone here could tell us why being able to have most everyone shoot full auto into a blind jungle ambush would be beneficial.
You had to be there. Maybe you were.

Early M16s had a one in 14 spin in the rifling, and there were only 4 rifling grooves. Later 16s had 6 grooves and 1 in 12 spin. In close encounters, the one in 14 spin let the bullet "wobble" and effectively made the 5.56 a bit more destructive. But this configuration was near useless at longer ranges. And if I remember correctly, there were some grumblings the first rifles were close to being called a violation of Geneva conventions. (edit) I just checked the Wikipedia, on the M16, and I see this is true, or at least widely believed.
What happens after a nuke exchange, is any one's guess as to what was and wasn't useful. Shear numbers, are going to favor the 7.62 x 39 rifles. :)

From what I've read about close range, small arm warfare in Europe during WWII...was many soldiers were just pointing their M1s etc and not really selecting specific (men) targets...and a lot of ammunition was wasted because of this...

For every round fired at a specific target I fired 100 at non specific targets. Quantity versus Quality.

Suppression volley fire, from small arms, was a very important aspect of modern warfare, from WWI up until the Korean war. It then became a bit less important to military strategists, as controlling the air space first, was the goal, and with close air support, suppression, or as others would call it, "harassment" volleys from small arms, fell out of the tactics playbook for ground forces.
Own the sky, first, and than just call in an air strike.
In a post nuke world, suppression becomes much more important again.
The lowly 22 long, has an advantage, since you can carry 1000 rounds easily,... till one runs out of 22 long. But you have 50,000 rounds and the perps have far fewer, more precious ammo.

Welcome to Russian army, where you get to procure your own sleeping bags, meds, tourniquets, tampons to plug bullet wounds...and don't forget to get a hammer for your head, so you could get amnesia and forget how f*cked you are.

Russians has word game on moBilization
