Tiny house as a first home solution for my son?

Barndominium. When they leave, you get a heck of a shop with a mother-in-law apartment so they can come visit with the grandkids. Better yet. Tell them "Fly. Be free". Let them figure out life on their own.

Irrigation well. Questions about pressure tank and freezing.

Update: Got everything done but an insulated house of some kind. I went with a horizontal tank as it makes the house smaller. The service disconnect is a bit redundant as the power pole is 25 ft away and in sight. But, I needed a J-box anyway to split out the 120V utility circuit. The...

Irrigation well. Questions about pressure tank and freezing.

Would you have a link to such a dome? The wellhead doesn't need insulation. Just the nearby equipment. Wellhead has a pitless adapter 18" below grade. We get overnight Temps as low as the mid-teens, but not for long as the day heats up usually above freezing. Not worried about the...

Irrigation well. Questions about pressure tank and freezing.

Thanks for the ideas so far. I must have a pressure tank. This is not for open irrigation. It will support hose bibs, drip irrigation and such. I cannot bury anything. Here in east Tennessee, you hit rock quickly. For instance, my primary well is 5 ft of clay and 195 ft of limestone. :)

Irrigation well. Questions about pressure tank and freezing.

I have an adjacent second property that has a well that used to be for a mobile home that has long ago been removed. The well pumps just fine. If I recall correctly, it is a 1 HP pump in a 300 ft well. Somewhere around here, I have the original well report with the specifics...

Basics on making up steel tubes with JIC ends

I'm interested in this topic as well. My interest is not so much on alternate sized fittings, but in what tooling to use to flare stainless tubing? Most stuff I've seen does not seem geared to stainless lines. And some specifically say not to use on stainless. I would love to replace a few...

    Usawolverine.com aka Wolverine attachments

That has got to be the crappiest website I've ever seen. I have always supposed wolverine skid steer stuff was Chinese. The local ag auction house sells these. The auger drive with 12 and 18" augers generally sells at about $2500. For that price I'd rather buy something more known that I...

Can <40hp compact tractor tow a trailer?

Why are hoses hard to connect???

If you would clarify a couple of things I have not noticed in your posts. 1) Is this the grapple side or the tractor side? 2) what type of grapple do you have and how do you store it? In my previous post, I proposed that the top tines not being grounded are creating pressure, which needs...

Why are hoses hard to connect???

Grapples present a unique challenge. I'll guess the OP is having problems with the grapple side connector. Its fairly easy to relieve pressure on the tractor side. Power down and cycle the 3rd function or whatever. The grapple is interesting as when attached, you have gravity acting on the...

Ballast Compact TLB should i remove tire fluid?

On my MX4800, I can easily lift the rear tires with the backhoe and adjust position. I can even jump the ditch without much effort. I guess my opinion is if you can do the work you need to do with ballast, I'd keep the ballast. A heavy tractor is a good tractor.

    Engine oil

I stopped at 6 stores to find 3 gallons of T5 for my 400 hour service. We have one auto parts store here that had "we have Rotella" on their...

    Fencing my property

Thanks for the replies so far. As I said, I don't know what I don't know, but I know more now. For 24 acres, I'm loath to inset the fence a fair distance as it encroaches too much into the available acreage and in certain areas, fence line is the best pasture land anyway. I agree that it...

    MX5400 breakout/lift strength?

My MX4800 can certainly lift the rear tires if I'm not ballasted. A I can lift a full bucket of crusher run and can barely lift pallets of wall blocks. I can lift enough to be sketchy even with the 1500 lb backhoe attached. Off hand I'd say you have a problem. Either that or Kubota downrated...

What are some good online sources for Cat 6 cable and pass thru connectors?

    I'm not the only dummy

Good Job. Remember that the rebuild shop would have to make 2 rods from scratch. That is several hours of work. At probably $100/hour it adds up. Then a couple of hours to replace all the seals and test.
  31. M

    I'm not the only dummy

There are about 4 different ways to secure the gland in the end of the cylinder. We'd need pics to know which one you got. If you can leave the far end installed on the tractor any heavy wrenching will be easier. You might need to find an appropriate pin spanner too.
  32. M

    I'm not the only dummy

Interesting you can get rods. Rebuilding is not rocket science (and I'm a rocket scientist). Perhaps tedious to get some of the stiffer seals in place, but not hard.
  33. M

    I'm not the only dummy

We all do silly things. My loader curl cylinders are $900, i think $600 is fine. My biggest fear is bending my backhoe curl cylinder dragging out rocks and stumps. If you get a bigger cylinder, will the diameter fit? Are the cross tubes about the right width. Do you need hose adapters? Also...
  34. M

    I'm not the only dummy

Remove the cylinders. Articulate by other means. If I were you, I'd write the $1200 check. Why would you want to put the cheapest possible non-OEM cylinders in place of what you know works (when you don't do silly things).
  35. M

    I'm not the only dummy

At 2x, just buy OEM cylinders.
  36. M

    I'm not the only dummy

Ok, What is the rebuild price? I'm still thinking its the best course of action. On stroke, I'd probably articulate the loader and measure actual installed requirements.
  37. M

    I'm not the only dummy

So. What is wrong with the $300 rebuild. To save $100, you have to have custom bushings made, which have cost. Probably $100-200. You save maybe peanuts. Get them rebuilt and move on. Also, if you increase the rod diameter, you will decrease your curl force.
  38. M

    I'm not the only dummy

You should have a local hydraulics shop that can rebuild those cylinders faster than you can get some things mailed to you. Shouldn't be too expensive.

L3130 blew something in front end

Your pictures are a little too close to get proper context of the damage, but it looks like the scoring is inboard of the o-ring seating surface. Measure and check. Do not use an additional sealer, it will goo up the o-ring and not allow it to work correctly.
  48. M

L3130 blew something in front end

On messick's site, looks like $600 or so in parts. An axle, a cover, bearings and seals. Not too bad for 15 years. I'd change the bearings on the opposite side too.

Valve that detents only one direction

You already know, excluding the cost issue that my proposed solution is correct. Its how everyone does it and, if I recall correctly, you have given exactly that advise to others. You didn't say what tractor, but if it like your and my MX tractors, its a ISO 7241 B QD for the backhoe loop...

Valve that detents only one direction

You don't need extra couplers. Just an extra hose or two. You just put the valve in the Backhoe loop before the backhoe. If not in use, the backhoe works normally. You remove the QD from the existing BH supply line and hook that hose to the new valve "P" port. (You will likely need to...
  51. M

Valve that detents only one direction

You are correct that the material must have yielded to have a permanent offset. However, its not that big of a deal. Bend it back. Consider that a myriad of mild steel shapes are formed on a press brake including a lot of your tractor.

    Question about third function valve

I think the dealer hooked it up right since it works. I'm thinking this might be a safety thing. You always have pressure to the rod end of the cylinder. This being the normally closed position for the system. Then, you activate the open function. Piston diameter being larger on the back side of the piston forces cylinder open so the bucket can...

Backhoe Proper way to park tractor w backhoe when not in use?

Of course. Just use it regularly. :) It takes a couple of weeks to drop the bucket to ground. Generally it gets used more frequently. My bigger issue is when it is I detach it to use the 3ph. The stabilizers bleed down until the frame grounds. The hoses will still attach, but you got...

    Strange belt failure

Well, I guess I'm going to check my Caroni belts before next mow. I'll do that after I cuss the designer who put the roller grease zerks right behind the skids. I got to figure out how to grease the roller without unbolting the skids.

Backhoe Proper way to park tractor w backhoe when not in use?

Mine parks indoors. I put the FEL on the ground. I just let the backhoe float wherever it is. I can't use the travel lock. Its 2" too tall for the door. I don't bother to ground the bucket.

Quickconnect hydraulic coupler issue (and not from too much pressure)

Take a 1/4 inch punch and dead blow hammer and tap on the nipple. Hit it hard enough to move the poppet nipple inside but don't beat the crap out of it. Cover things with a rag to catch fluid. Basically the same as the male, but in a hole. At this point, however I'd probably just loosen the...

Well, I'm not sure. If you go back to your posted diagram Hyd1.pdf and look at the hydraulic block (item 1) you have valves 5 and 6. I have no idea if they are separate and move independently or not. But, with valve 6 in the closed position, flow goes to loader and BH and in the open...

You are thinking too much. :) This is the best solution and really, not much extra cash. The valve is the big ticket item and that won't change regardless of how you plumb it up. That is reasonable. Go find some generic valve internal flow diagrams. You will see that on open center...

Quickconnect hydraulic coupler issue (and not from too much pressure)

Well gee, come up with a way simpler than mine. :) Other than the $50 in extra parts, great idea. Since I have a short bottom tine root grapple, I cannot store it closed unless its leaning up against something. It just falls over. Then, its a real pain to mechanically attach. BTDT.

Yet again, your sentence is confusing, please clarify. Do you have two hoses at PB or do you mean the PB port is routed to the 3rd function and then from the 3rd function to the backhoe. The first is a no-no. The second is normal. Please share the FEL list if it is different than your...
  119. M

Quickconnect hydraulic coupler issue (and not from too much pressure)

Grapples are problematic as the weight of the lid exerts pressure on the cylinders. You need to remove that pressure. This is how I connect my Grapple: I store my grapple half open with the ends of top and bottom tines on the ground. I do not connect the grapple hoses together. Each is...

They do make Cat1-Cat3 "quick hitch" adapter bushings. Making something quick hitch "compatible" doesn't mean it isn't non-QH ready. Thus, factory installed cat 1 pins are appropriate. Since most folks don't use a QH, why include useless extra parts? However, a good dealer should enquire if...
  126. M

3pt hitch Hydraulic top link and control

I was talking about the FEL valve. Work ports are the things that go to functions. For the FEL, that would be curl and lift. The non-work ports would be whatever is left. Having "tank" go to the 3rd function makes no sense. Tank "should be" under no pressure. It would be prudent to scan...

Question: How many hoses are attached to the loader valve? 6 or 7 (or different). Question: Can you trace the fluid flow? Does it go: pump > loader > 3rd function > backhoe or pump > 3rd function > loader > backhoe. Need picture of where supply hose comes out of tractor and where it returns.
  132. M

3pt hitch Hydraulic top link and control

Link to valve spec please. A & b should be blocked to p & t when the valve is centered (idle). Whats the problem? P flows directly through the valve to T when idle. This is normal for a 3rd function and not a problem.

3pt hitch Hydraulic top link and control

No need for the rear remote valve to be near the loader controls for rear remotes. The only line that can be teed is a tank line. Its is not necessary to go from the loader to the rear and back to the 3rd function. As long as the valves are in series and you have power beyond and tank ports...

Flail mower with 3 point quick attach

I gave up using the flail with the quick attach. Since I only use it 4 times a year, I'll live with conventional 3ph connection. My only idea would be to raise the 3 connection points maybe 4 inches. That then limits how much you can raise the unit for travel and obstructions. I already...

I went and replicated your experiment with my mx4800. Full bucket of 3/8 minus. Lifted it easily. No rear ballast. I can turn the front wheels about 3/4 to full lock before binding. If I start rolling, I get full lock. I'd say you need to have your steering looked at.

    Brilliant seeder hydraulic connectors

Kubota does not use ag connectors on the backhoe loop. I'd have to go check, but the are not pioneer style. Not flat face either. Also, I think you need a controllable hydraulic source for the seeder. Using the bare backhoe loop won't work. You need rear remotes.

Power beyond to control extra remotes

  155. M

Power beyond to control extra remotes

That is exactly how I installed my rear remotes. Assuming it is the same ad a Kubota, you only have 2 lines to the backhoe. They would be the input and power beyond lines for your new valves. Your new valves will also require a line to tank. In my case, I Teed into the same port my loader...

Is this an odd set up?

Think outside the box. No one said the QDs had to be just right there. I propose you move the original hydraulic lines back to their original locations. Without your valve, I assume you would have a PB loop with a male/female QD pair in the back when the BH is absent. Put that back. Add...
  163. M

Is this an odd set up?

If it were me, I'd add a quick disconnect pair in front of the blower valve and move the PB hose from valve to BH as necessary. Logically, then you have either your normal BH inserted into the hydraulic loop or your valve. This is exactly how I have my rear remotes plumbed. Can't use 'em...

    3rd function hydraulics

You don't really need width. You want it strong enough to do the job, but not so heavy you lose lift capacity. But, in the end, its a personal decision. Tell me, why do you think you need wider? How much does your current choice weigh? 700, 800 lbs? Thats half your available lift capacity.
