It sounds like you have identified the root of the problem. One must have a little "play" in the chains (or they will snap or worst) but the sway should not be so much that an implement can rub the tires on either side.

Does it use oil? Motor oil will cause blue smoke. You said it starts after the tractor warms up. As the oil warms it thins and may be able to make it past the piston rings if they are worn.

The tank may be water logged. A tank should have some air in the tank. Small residential tanks sometimes have a valve stem so one can add air. In warm weather if the tank sweats all the way up the side the tank is full of water and has no air.
